Jazzmoose Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 Been reading this during spare moments lately (yeah, when I'm not on the computer chatting with you people!), and while I find an occasional annoyance, particularly in the area of "off topic" stuff, I don't seem to be reacting as negatively to this book as many do. Assuming anyone here does actively dislike this book, what exactly is it that tweaks you? Just curious... Quote
sheldonm Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 Hey guys, I haven't read the book but wanted to say hi to a couple of fellow ex-bnbb members. This is a pretty gool site! Quote
JSngry Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 Hi sheldon. Yeah, I dug the book quite a bit actually. I can see where the style might bug some people, but realistically, it's the best widely available source of firsthand recollections about Mingus, and if the zeitgeist didn't mind being felt, who am I to complain? Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 8, 2003 Author Report Posted March 8, 2003 Ah, but those were different days; if you tried that today, you'd be hit with a zeitgeist harrassment lawsuit! Quote
David Williams Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 So which should I read first: this or Beneath The Underdog? Quote
Soul Stream Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 I would read "Myself" first. I dug it. "Beneath" is a little more....is what it is. Does that make any sense? Quote
David Williams Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 Given that I've browsed 'Beneath' at the bookshop, you make sense enough - thanks. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 9, 2003 Report Posted March 9, 2003 Underdog is something to read when you've exhausted everything else - including Jane Austin. Both Priestley and Santoro give short shrift to the California years. Priestley at least tried. Santoro bailed. Everyone needs the info in the liners to the Uptown Mingus package. Bob Sunenblick, aided by yours truly, uncovered more information about the "formative" years than both of them put together. In many ways Mingus didn't advance his music beyond his late '40s tracks. Truly amazing stuff. Quote
David Williams Posted March 9, 2003 Report Posted March 9, 2003 Thanks Chuck. I'm still only half-way through Jane Austen. The Uptown set was on the mental list of stuff to pick up once I was back in work and in funds, which, as of last week, I am. Quote
JSngry Posted March 9, 2003 Report Posted March 9, 2003 Ah, but those were different days; if you tried that today, you'd be hit with a zeitgeist harrassment lawsuit! Dude, I DARE it to. I'd countersue SO damn fast it would NOT be funny. The zeitgeist and me have never really gotten along anyway. Must be fate. Or maybe just my shoes.... Quote
alankin Posted March 9, 2003 Report Posted March 9, 2003 ... Everyone needs the info in the liners to the Uptown Mingus package. Truly amazing stuff. Every serious Mingus fan should get this set. His musical origins go back a lot further than one would realize based on his commonly available work. And the booklet's fabulous. (96 pages, IIRC.) Quote
David Williams Posted March 9, 2003 Report Posted March 9, 2003 I've been meaning to get it for a long time, but, I suppose, I've delayed partly due to the criticism of some of the vocal performances. OK, I'll put things right asap. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 10, 2003 Author Report Posted March 10, 2003 So...where does one get this Uptown Mingus package? Quote
David Williams Posted March 10, 2003 Report Posted March 10, 2003 So...where does one get this Uptown Mingus package? When I find it I'll let you know - planning to have a look tonight. Quote
David Williams Posted March 10, 2003 Report Posted March 10, 2003 (edited) After a few hits of the Jazz Factory rip-off, finally found the real thing here: Cheap-CDs Is this site legit? Here too: CDNow (This is NOT one to buy used, though.) Edited March 10, 2003 by David Williams Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 10, 2003 Author Report Posted March 10, 2003 (edited) Duh...I didn't even think of checking there, David. Yeah, they're fine; I order from them quite a bit. I guess I just assumed it was "too hard to find" for them... Edited March 10, 2003 by Jazzmoose Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 If all else fails, you could always buy it from one of the producers - MMMEEE!!! Hard to find, my ass. Now that I mention it, it is going away. Why don't old guys have butts? Quote
David Williams Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Already on it's way from Cheap-CDs, thanks. Quote
