CJ Shearn Posted January 13, 2007 Report Posted January 13, 2007 I was unaware of Wounded Bird's reissue of this (that's because Jazzmatazz is not updated like it used to be) and I picked it up, had it on vinyl originally. Back then I thought this session wasn't so great but listening to it now, its got some great work from George Benson, and Grady Tate swings his ass off and of course the monologue is classic Organissimo has covered "Mimosa" so Quote
Joe G Posted January 13, 2007 Report Posted January 13, 2007 "... Ron, Stanley, George... GradyTate..." Quote
CJ Shearn Posted January 13, 2007 Author Report Posted January 13, 2007 "also Grady Tate's wife brought down some home cooked chicken, so we were layin back chompin on chicken and havin a ball" hey guys thats it........ on your next album have "Organissimo Rap" "we'd like to thank the cats on our board, Sangrey, Chewy, CJ, those are all some crazy motherfuckers, especially CJ, that Jimmy Smith, McDuff and Pat Metheny loving freak. oh yeah, chewy too, Hank Mobley's lover" Quote

Kyo Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 I was unaware of Wounded Bird's reissue of this So was I - thanks. Dito! I'll be picking this one up next month. Quote
Kyo Posted February 21, 2007 Report Posted February 21, 2007 I just got my copy of this, turns out I ordered the Rhino edition instead of the Wounded Bird one. Which is not a bad thing, it's just that I had ordered the other Wounded Bird Jimmy Smith reissue from the 80s (Keep on Comin') at the same time - and it turns out the Rhino edition of Off The Top includes most of the tracks from Keep on Comin' (all except the piano medley). CJ Shearn Posted February 22, 2007 Author Report Posted February 22, 2007 oh, that weird European twofer? my "Keep on Comin" is on Wounded Bird. Jimmy's piano playing there is more advanced than what most would think of his organ playing or aren't knowledgeable Quote
