Sundog Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 Is this a reasonable way to be exposed to this music for the first time? Are there better collections, or individual CDs that might be preferable? TIA Quote
Larry Kart Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 I've got a three-LP box of the major Dvorak quartets played by the Panocha and think it's excellent -- certainly far superior to the other performances of most of these works that I had at the time on DGG (the Prague Quartet?) and then dumped. On the other hand, the Panocha performances I have (rec. 1982-5) don't seem to be the ones that are in the box you're thinking of -- those date from 1993 or so. Quote
Sundog Posted January 11, 2007 Author Report Posted January 11, 2007 Apparently this cycle was produced between 1993-2000. Quote
Spontooneous Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 I have some of the earlier single releases, and enjoyed them all. Hope these are the same ones in the box. Quote
J.A.W. Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 (edited) I don't care much for the "early" quartets, and that rules out box sets with the complete quartets for me. I picked up the Vlach Quartet recordings of the later quartets, Nos.8-14 on Naxos. I've never heard the Panocha Quartet performances. Edited January 12, 2007 by J.A.W. Quote
Sundog Posted January 17, 2007 Author Report Posted January 17, 2007 Went with the Stamitz. Looking forward to checking it out this weekend. Quote
