Jazzin'D92 Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 That is still in high school? B/c everyone seems too old on here...lol. Quote
bertrand Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 If being out of high school is automatically old in your book then, yes, most (if not all) of us are geezers. I know you've been given a rough greeting elsewhere, but I'm always fascinated by young people who actually have an interest in jazz - there aren't that many out there. What artists are you interested in? Bertrand. Quote
RDK Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Man, I wish I listened to jazz in high school (anything other than Chuck Mangione that is). Didn't really "discover" it until college (age 18). Quote
Alexander Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Same here. I was about 19 when I discovered jazz. Didn't really start listening seriously until I was about 21. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 JazzKat is the youngest regular contributor, no? Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Yes, I believe JazzKat is still in high school. I was just getting into jazz at the tail end of high school, mainly Jimmy Smith. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Welcome! Yes, I started listening to jazz seriously in my senior year of high school. Electric Miles and some Ellington mostly. Although my mom's Dave Brubeck lps always got played by me as a teen. But I'm ANCIENT. Quote
brownie Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 I'm past ANCIENT... ...but I remember the high school days when other highschoolers and I discussed Miles Davis' latest albums and dress attire. That was when Miles was appearing at the Club St.Germain here after recording the soundtrack to 'Ascenseur Pour l'Echafaud'. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 (edited) Didn't have a clue about jazz when I was in high school (circa '83-'87), but I was a HUGE Hendrix nut for a couple years in there -- does that count? (Nothing could have prepared me better for late 60's and early 70's Miles - that's for sure.) In high school I probably heard a bit of my uncle's big band records over the years (he was always have me listen to stuff - but I only saw him about once a year when he was with his record collecton). And my mom had some Kenton I may have spun once just two see what it was. I took a Jazz 101 course in college during junior year, and really took an interest about a year after that (it took a while to sink in). Edited January 6, 2007 by Rooster_Ties Quote
JSngry Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Guess I was in the right place at the right time, although then, it seemed anything but. The 64-70 progression from Beatles to Hendirx to Zappa (with R&B playing steadily in the background) made the discovery of jazz at age 14 seem like the next logical step, as did the then presence of the popular "jazz-rock" horm bands. Throw in a school band program led by a club-date player w/a love for the music and a department store that was overflowing w/a seemingly endless supply of dirt-cheap jazz cutouts, and you got what in retrospect seems like destiny, even if it was in on of the most god-forsaken, backass portions on the Newknbighted States of Murrica. So, Danielle, you're 14 now. You've got approximately 10 years to set your course in life before it gets kinda "set" to the point where making meaningful changes starts getting more difficult with each tick of the clock. Don't fuck up, ok? Quote
Jazzin'D92 Posted January 7, 2007 Author Report Posted January 7, 2007 Haha I think I'm starting to LOVE this! It's too bad that jazz wasn't like being introduced as much back in the day. I was introduced at the end of 6th grade and have been playing jazz since 7th. I've learned quite a bit. We'd have listening logs and listen to a variety of music from Miles Davis, Maynard Ferguson, Charlie Parke,Count Bassie. Well we'd have to guess what type of jazz the song was like: be-bop, swing, new orleans, etc. The song that make me laugh the most is called Salt Peanuts, lol. Don't worry Jsngry I won't eff up. I have goals set for the next 4 years of high school. I plan on being in an orchestra or something like that when I grow up. Maybe even become a composer! I just find music fasinating! I admire anyone with mad skills! Meaning who are like really good musicians! Quote
Bright Moments Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 at age 14 anita o'day was a marathon dancer singing for coins. (still reading her bio - ) Quote
Guy Berger Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 I was introduced at the end of 6th grade and have been playing jazz since 7th. Danielle, you are off to a very good start! Guy Quote
Jazzin'D92 Posted January 7, 2007 Author Report Posted January 7, 2007 Haha thanks! Why do you think that. Not that I'm doubting myself or your opinion. Quote
JSngry Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 I just find music fasinating! You think it's fascinating now, wait until you've really gotten into it. It'll take over your life like you never dreamed possible. Don't say you weren't warned. Quote
Jazzin'D92 Posted January 7, 2007 Author Report Posted January 7, 2007 haha I think it has. Everything this yr has been about band band band. Nothing else I bought 3 new instruments b/c I was in need of them. I can only imagine what the coming yrs have to bring. I can say it will be uhhh like 10 times worse? I mean my room is starting to have a musical theme. I have tons and tons of posters. haha. Quote
Dan Gould Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 So Danielle, do you also listen to the "music" that your peers do, or do you mostly listen to the weird stuff that us old folks dig? And how do your classmates look at your interest in jazz? Do you get a lot of crap about it? Oh, and welcome to the forum. We could use some young blood, especially someone who isn't afraid to call us on our b.s. (you know, I just spent thirty seconds trying to figure out what is the proper way to abbreviate "bs" - capitals or no? Period or no period? I didn't want to have Alex come down on me.) Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 I think most of her peers like gangsta rap. I mean what's not to love!?!?! Quote
Jazzin'D92 Posted January 7, 2007 Author Report Posted January 7, 2007 Lol. BS. BS bs. bs same thing who cares! haha. Well actually a lot of us band kids at my school have two sides. One is MOST of us like to listen to jazz, so I really don't get crap about it. This side is basically shown when we're among our own "kind". Then there is outside world of band where we hear a good song we'll download it, or practice occasionally. But yes I do listen to other types of music other than jazz. Like I guess the type more suitable for us young people, unless there are some adults that are hip and do listen to what we do. So yeah surprisngly I don't get a lot of crap. I think it's b/c our school has such an amazing band program and the most awesome director ever! We're really known for Jazz, we have one of the top 5 jazz bands in Arizona, and one of the best in the nation. Quote
sheldonm Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 A 14 year old defining "what's hip" is too funny! lol, as Danielle would say! m~ Quote

Larry Kart Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 Hello Danielle -- Frank Rosaly, one of Chicago's best drummers (I'm a Chicago-area person), grew up in Arizona and played with the Northern Arizona U. band. Here's his website: http://rosalywelcome.blogspot.com/ I caught the fever in seventh grade and early in eighth grade got to go to a Jazz at the Philharmonic concert that included Lester Young, Roy Eldridge, and Dizzy Gillespie. It felt being in the same room with Zeus or Apollo. Quote
Alexander Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 I think most of her peers like gangsta rap. I mean what's not to love!?!?! Hey! I like gangsta rap! Nas's "Hip Hop is Dead" is a GREAT album! Quote
