Ed S Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 (edited) Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions That boxset is really good. And there are various DSM covers too. It's been a number of years since I listened to this. I had forgotten how good it is. Those DSM covers are are very nice. Nicely packaged set. Edited December 15, 2014 by Ed Swinnich Quote
Bluesnik Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 I think I'm going to play this tonight. Thanks for pointing it out. Quote
jeffcrom Posted December 16, 2014 Report Posted December 16, 2014 Tonight's Louis: Louis Armstrong and the Blues Singers 1924-1930 (Charly). Disc 5, accompanying Baby Mack, Hociel Thomas, Sippie Wallace, Nolan Welsh, and Butterbeans & Susie. Quote
mikeweil Posted December 21, 2014 Report Posted December 21, 2014 Got a copy fom amazon.de for € 36 including shipping. Wanted it for the session with McFarland in the first place, but since used copies of that single CD go for much higher prices I decided to take 17 and a half discs of Bill Evans as a bonus ... Quote
JSngry Posted December 25, 2014 Report Posted December 25, 2014 Trying not to LOL at thinking that what if Jackie Paris had been Tony Bennett and vice-versa...I'm glad it ended up like it did, but still, it's a hoot to think about. I love Mingus, really love him, and this is the one chapter that I never had a really clear picture of, so...good times ahead. Quote

Steve Reynolds Posted December 25, 2014 Report Posted December 25, 2014 Mad Dogs - On The Loose Looking forward to many listens to this one, then I look forward to more listens to the first one. Quote
Bluesnik Posted December 31, 2014 Report Posted December 31, 2014 A good chance to hear the different approaches of two jazz greats towards working with Miles Davis (there are two concerts here: one with the Kind of Blue band minus Cannonball Adderley, with Coltrane, and the other with Stitt substituting Coltrane). One outblazing Miles completely and the other allowing him to shine on his own. Both are great. Quote
jeffcrom Posted January 3, 2015 Report Posted January 3, 2015 One more before bed: Art Tatum - Complete Brunswick & Decca Recordings 1932-1941 (Affinity); disc three. I don't like the mastering of this set - all the surface noise has been filtered out, leaving the music sounding kind of hollow. But I can live with it for the chance to hear this incredible music in its entirety. Quote
Clunky Posted January 3, 2015 Report Posted January 3, 2015 One more before bed: Art Tatum - Complete Brunswick & Decca Recordings 1932-1941 (Affinity); disc three. I don't like the mastering of this set - all the surface noise has been filtered out, leaving the music sounding kind of hollow. But I can live with it for the chance to hear this incredible music in its entirety. I have a single Affinity disc taken from this plus a handful of sides on 78. I do think these are amongst Tatum's finest sides. I don't no why Tatum wasn't ever really recorded well. Quote
jeffcrom Posted January 6, 2015 Report Posted January 6, 2015 Charlie Parker Complete Verve, disc 6. In my opinion, the January, 1951 "Au Privave" session is one of the monuments of recorded jazz. Among its other pleasures, it's one of Miles Davis' best early sessions. Quote
hbbfam Posted January 6, 2015 Report Posted January 6, 2015 Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions I didn't know this box existed until reading this thread. i found a used copy of this on bullmoose. What great music and very good sound. I need to find a reasonably priced Complete Jazz At The Philharmonic1944-53 now. Quote
