jeffcrom Posted October 9, 2011 Report Posted October 9, 2011 Miles Davis - The Complete On the Corner Sessions (Columbia) Disc 4. "Calypso Frelimo" is one of Miles' masterpieces, in my opinion - 32 minutes of incredibly bad-ass music. And "He Loved Him Madly" is pretty good, too, although it's about 10 minutes too long. Quote

miles65 Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 The Properbox "The Arrangers Touch" disc 2. Disc 1 has as sample of Duke Ellington's style "Reminiscing In Tempo" (all 4 parts). I wonder how representative of Ellington's style this is. Four sepereate tracks would have said more about Ellington's style than this I think. Not that I don't like Reminiscing. Quote

jeffcrom Posted October 20, 2011 Report Posted October 20, 2011 Lu Watters' Yerba Buena Jazz Band - Complete Good Time Jazz Recordings. I've always been kind of a snob about the San Francisco trad style, although I like some of Turk Murphy's recordings - I mean, why listen to that stuff when you could listen to New Orleans bands? But a few days ago I replayed the "This is Jazz" broadcast featuring the Yerba Buena band, and really enjoyed it. I remembered seeing this set at a steal of a price at a local used record store, and picked it up today. I've listened to the first disc, and mostly enjoyed it, although it confirms that some of my reservations about the SF style were well-founded. Quote
