Guest Bixieland
Complete Bitches Brew...Giving this another chance, never a big fan of this set I know what you mean. The original album, as edited, is quite astonishing -- of course. But the rest of the "Complete" set is good for a vibe, but not intensely rewarding. I paid $25 for the long-box version off Amazon. So it was like getting a regular copy of B.B. that was substantially expanded and remastered (in 04'). ---------- Currently I'm enjoying...Turn Out the Stars, Disc 6 (which cost only $16!!! Thank you Lon!) This is really great stuff. I like it a lot more than the 61' Vanguard set. Maybe it's the 1980 vibe, and/or the electric bass -- but it all makes everything sound beachy and relaxed to me -- sippin' cocktails with a tropical breeze. This, combined with Evans, who's playing very authoritatively -- he's rippin' threw this stuff! -- like he knows this is it for him....but it's a wonderful contrast to the aforementioned "beachy" feel and the contemplative nature of Evan's style. Notes are flyin' all over the place -- but I'm not the least bit stressed!

sidewinder
Bixieland, that's not an electric bass. Yeah, Marc Johnson was on conventional upright in that group. Absolutely no electronics !

neveronfriday
Supposedly an obscurity outside of Europe: Arnvid Meyers Orchestra: Right Out of Kansas City 1959-1973, issue by Sundance Music in Denmark. Guests include Ben Webster, Benny Carter, Don Byas, Vic Dickenson, Coleman Hawkins, Buck Clayton, Charlie Shavers, Brew Moore and others. 5 CDs + a DVD A great set! Now listening to: Various Artists: Jazz In Sweden 1949-1961 - The Legendary Years (Rhino) disc 1 Disc 1 contains superb recordings by Harry Arnold and his Swedish Radio Studio Orchestra from 1957-61, among the first rate soloists are: Bengt-Arne Wallin, Benny Bailey, Ake Persson, Arne Domnerus, Bjarne Nerem, Lucky Thompson, Bengt Hallberg, Egil Johanssen I bought myself both of these boxed sets after having heard about them here first, in this thread. Thanks for the heads up, guys. Great stuff. P.S.: Why do these Japanese boxed sets (Jazz in Sweden) never have English notes anywhere? Even the French usually put in an English section into their booklets. But not the Japanese. Argh!
Guest Bixieland
Bixieland, that's not an electric bass. Yeah, Marc Johnson was on conventional upright in that group. Absolutely no electronics ! wow! Really? It sounds like one of these. I've actually got my fretless fender sounding almost EXACTLY like Marc's on these recordings. A real rubbery, mid-range sound. Playing almost on the neck and sometimes adding a mic to catch any plucky "acoustic" happenings - though it's not needed to get that tone. Listening to Turn Out Stars right now -- I swear it sounds electric!! Edited July 13, 2009 by Bixieland
JohnT
His Acoustic Bass was going through an amplifier! Besides having two acoustic basses, I have an NS Design WAV 4 Electric Upright Bass (EUB - pictured in the middle above) -- the Bass of the Future -- sounds awesome!! sidewinder
wow! Really? It sounds like one of these. After seeing them live a couple of times on Evans's last Europe tour around the time of these recordings and sitting about 8 ft from Mr Johnson, I can guarantee that it was a conventional upright bass. David Ayers
My two most recent acquisitions are both in a way accidental but turn out to be sets to live with, in different ways. One is the Jack Johnson set which I thought I wouldn't care for (based on Spotify listenings and based on never having liked the original LP). Actually I still don't care much for the LP, nor do I care for all the Hermeto Pascal material, but the other chunks please me greatly and to my great surprise I find myself coming back and back to them. My other is of course the now famously OOP Sony Ellington. Great music, great mastering, just 4 CDs of amazing invention. That lot cost me about $25 all-in. Now that's what I call music! (the new box from Storyville that no one but me seems to be interested in..... ) I'm enjoying it... Mine is still in the mail. I think more people would be into it if they didn't already have quite a bit of the material. Right now I'm grooving to the Canadian Universal Oscar Peterson set.
