Starting at disc 9, when Jimmie Blanton had arrived, right now I'm spinning disc 11. Let's see how far I will get.

it's a tough job, but someone's got to do it

A friend gave me this box set yesterday, and wow—so good! Quite a treasure trove of later Benny Goodman. I’ve been aware of the Yale Archive releases for many years, but had picked up only the one that covers big band recordings from 1957-1964. I’m just one disc into this collection and have already ordered its V. 6-10 followup:

Listening to the first disc of the second Music Masters Benny Goodman Yale archives box set, which includes a 1966 gig at the Rainbow Grill with Herbie Hancock filling in for Hank Jones—who knew?!?

One of my all-time favorite jazz box sets. I’ve listened all the way through three times, I think, since I purchased it all the way back in 1999. Wonderful booklet, too, though my copy has started to come apart over time.

A great box - as is the ‘Nucleus at the BBC’.

Yes, I'm happy with it. Purchased with practically zero foreknowledge, but have really enjoyed it and listened to the whole box through several times.

I opted for Nucleus's 6-CD Torrid Zone box on Esoteric (instead of the BBC set), and that was probably my favorite 2021 purchase. Would like to hear the BBC set, but doubt that I'll make the significant expenditure...

Miles - In a Silent Way.

Any time I play this, after I finish disc 3, I go back to disc 1 and end up playing the entire thing two or three times in a row.

As a fan of electronica, I rank this as by far my favorite Miles Davis album, and his most "important" album.

Never heard of this one. Looked at Discogs' track list and was struck by Julia Lee's session for Premier. But not "Lotus blossom". what happened there? Mercury forget to buy the master when they bought the other stuff?

Hot Jazz on Blue Note : Various [Jazz]: Amazon.es: CDs y vinilos}

I love this set. And I was really surprised today (but knew it from before )when I discovered Ray Coniff :wacko: playing trombone there. In a session by the Art Hodes Chicagoans.

Conniff was in Artie Shaw’s big band in the early/mid 1940s as well—did some composing and arranging. There’s a Jasmine CD that gathers a number of Conniff-connected sides from the swing era. And yeah, Hot Jazz On Blue Note is a treasure trove! Great notes (as always) by Dan Morgenstern.

Speaking of notes... Listening right now to a 2014 reissue of JSP’s Eddie Condon set. Like a couple of other JSP reissues of sets that originally came out in the 1990s/early 00s, the booklet seems to have been severely truncated. There actually is no booklet, just skimped-down selections from it in the CD tray liners. Bit of a drag, but still a fine gathering of Condon recordings from the late 1920s into the 1940s.
