Alexander Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 (edited) Alexander, When ending a sentence with a quotation, where should one place the period? Should it be inside the quotation mark or outside? In the United States, in it considered proper to place the period inside the quotation mark. In the UK (and Canada and Australia, etc.) the period is placed outside the quotation mark. Edited January 6, 2007 by Alexander Quote
Alexander Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 And being understood is always hip! I understood Reagan perfectly well. Did that make him hip? Maybe his English teacher was on his case. That could explain everything. I said that it's hip to be understood, not that understandable people are necessarily hip. Quote
JSngry Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 I think it would've been hipper if Reagan hadn't been so well understood. Quote
RDK Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Am I sick for hoping that ARIC drops in on this thread? Quote
JSngry Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Am I sick for hoping that ARIC drops in on this thread? I was actually thinking that this might be a good time to start the Organissimo Dating Service... Quote
Jazzin'D92 Posted January 6, 2007 Author Report Posted January 6, 2007 I think BOTH OF YOU WHO CARE SOOO MUCH ABOUT PUNCTUATION AREN'T HIP! And no where near it either. Both of you sound like two old men who are wierd. And Hip meaning like cool and with the generation not like old skool. haha. And I will write however I want b/c it's a free country and to me it doesn't matter really. I rather stay a kid while I can! By the way I'm 14 so lay off. Quote

rostasi Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 (edited) Now listen guys. We ran off Terrie last year, so let's be fair this time. Plus she doesn't take any s**t and I like that! So Danielle, tell us how you discovered us here and what's your interest in jazz? Oh, and welcome! Edited January 6, 2007 by rostasi Quote
bertrand Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 I second that (see other thread). What do you play? Who do you listen to? Bertrand. Quote
Ron S Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Who do you listen to? In other words, "to whom do you listen?" Quote
J Larsen Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Now listen guys. We ran off Terrie last year, so let's be fair this time. Plus she doesn't take any s**t and I like that! Damnit, and I really wanted to ask a question about the three asteriks ellipsis rule - it's relevant to a paper I'm writing. Oh well. Quote
RDK Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 We're just teasin' you, Danielle. We may not be hip, but we're all pretty cool once you get to know us. Jump into a thread and talk some jazz. What/who do you like? Do you play? There ain't a lot of kids here, so asking about school might not get you too far. Quote
rostasi Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 She's not a kid - she's 14. Man, there was no way I could talk to anybody about jazz when I was in high school. It would be cool tho if there were a jazz forum for teenagers! Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Most teenagers don't know a lot, so it probaly wouldn't be too beneficial. Quote
Alexander Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 (edited) Hey, Danielle, I'm just kidding around. Don't be so serious. You're far too young! I know, I know. I'm a high school English teacher. I'm the enemy. For what it's worth, you seem like a pretty together kid. We're all glad you're here and that we can help corrupt the morals of a minor...er...I mean, broaden your interest in jazz through our input. I should note that we are a pretty well educated and well spoken bunch around here, and that for the most part people on this board refrain from "netspeak" as it is employed by the young people. Just as it is considered proper "netiquette" to refrain from typing in all caps, it is also considered courteous to (at the very least) be MINDFUL of things like spelling. I'm not saying that each post has to look like a doctoral thesis (you should see Aric's posts sometimes), but it should at the very least be clear and easy to understand. For the most part, I am NOT a grammar nazi. I was just picking on you because, well, you were new and presented a splended opportunity to do some hazing. I'm done now. sal Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 I've never understood the tendency of so many people on this board to get a kick out of running new members out of here. Quote
