You have only 5 artists/bands to take to your desert island

Who are they? Remember you can have ALL of their music.

Mine are (not in order)

Frank Zappa

Tom Waits

Pat Metheny

Weather Report

John Coltrane

Who are yours ? ;)

Gene Harris

Hank Mobley

B.B. King

Lowell Fulson

As usual, the last choice is hardest ... but I'll say Horace Silver

Each of my choices aside from Mobley have or had long recording careers so that maximizes the variety of sidemen/contexts. And in the case of Fulson, he made consistently enjoyable recordings through his entire career, never really coasting, as B.B. might be accused of.

Firstly, John Coltrane,

then I think Horace Silver,

proberly Charles Mingus,

Donald Byrd,

Phil Woods,

If you let me have drummer I would have a nice little sextet.

Why is everybody in such a hurry to get to these desert islands?

Not me, I've been and it was pure hell.

How about pick a top five artist recordings you would want to be stranded with in an upper west side penthouse?

Jim: Read the first post again. He said that you can bring the artists with you, not just the records. In other words, you can take Monday with you! Still not going?

I would be sure and bring only women. ;)

Billy Holiday

Dinah Washington

Abbey Lincoln (from back in the day, of course)

Maria Callas

Paris Hilton (She counts. She just released a new record)

hehe :P

Now your picks make sense, except Paris Hilton. If it was me, I'd snag one of those hot latin pop sensations like Shakira.

Paris Hilton (She counts...)
She can?

Old Firesign Theatre bit about high school:

Porgie: Mudhead, you don't even have any extracurricular activities

Mudhead: Gee, Porgie, doesn't Dolores count?

Porgie: Only to ten, Mudhead.

My artists (for their music):

Art Blakey

Miles Davis

Duke Ellington

Bob Dylan

John Coltrane

Pains me to leave out others who were brilliant but their primes were too short to make the cut (Bird, Byrds, Beatles, Who, etc.) or who have had long, often distinguished careers, but I just can't make room for them (Richard Thompson, Neil Young, McCoy Tyner, Jackie McLean, Chick Corea, etc.). I needed to have at least one vocal artist, so chose the Voice of my generation.

Thanks for the "More Science High" reminder. Fantastic stuff!

Yea, maybe I should have taken some time to think about it. :g

Remember you can have ALL of their music.

I'm going to assume that we're talking about everything- as leader and otherwise.

For starters, I know from searching my database for most prolific artist in my collection... I'd take everything with Paul Chambers on it.

For similar reasons (and for a different variety of material than what Chambers was on), I'd probably go with everything Barney Kessel recorded on.

Kenny Burrell- gotta have all of his guitar sounds, and he was prolific as a sideman in a variety of settings as well.

Jobim (wish I could take everything he composed instead of just what he recorded himself).

T-Bone Walker (I'd swim over to Dan's island to hear B.B.)

I could live without ever again hearing anything under the heading of "rock".

Oh, and I think the reason to go to the island is obvious- to get away from the rat race, listen in peace, and quit shopping for any more goddamn CD's. ^_^

Yeah, I don't see the appeal of Paris Hilton. She's a skank (and a bony skank to boot). I'd take Christina Aguilera. She can sing and she's easy on the eyes!

Well, the idea was that I had so much class in the first four that I needed some skank as well.
