HolyStitt Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 Mosaic now has the Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions (#170) & The Classic Columbia Condon Mob Sessions (#206) set's listed as Running Low. Quote
montg Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 I have both, thankfully. The Condon Mob is one of my favorite Mosaic sets. There's some beautiful playing by Bobby Hackett. The Condon/Wettling sessions stand out, as do the Rampart sessions--dig Eddie Miller and Abe Lincoln Quote
J Larsen Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 Thanks for posting. Wish I had known about this before clearing out my cart at yourmusic in anticipation of the rate increase. Oh well, just ordered both set anyway... Quote
tranemonk Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 HAH!!!! My largesse paid off since I ordered the Classic Capitol Sessions a few months ago.... For ONCE I'm all set.... Quote

ASNL77 Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 Very bad timing. It is a lot of money a few days after xmas..... I feel like letting them go but I can hear a little voice telling me to get at least one...... Not sure which one to go for though! Quote
jazzbo Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 Good God, I couldn't choose between them, both are excellent sets. . . . Money would dictate whether the Capitol could be purchased or not. . . . Quote
Harold_Z Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 Isn't it for situations such as this that charge card were invented? Quote
tranemonk Posted December 30, 2006 Report Posted December 30, 2006 I went for the Capitol Sessions... no interest in the Condon.... ASNL77 said: Very bad timing. micha Posted December 31, 2006 Report Posted December 31, 2006 Thanks to another poster on this forum I knew the Capitol set would be selling out soon and so I managed to snag it below cost on eBay earlier this month. I'll listen to some more samples but it looks like I may end up purchasing the Condon direct. Quote
gslade Posted January 1, 2007 Report Posted January 1, 2007 Shit, I guess I'll have to order the condon mob and the ellington I'll be broke for the new year also Quote
Clunky Posted January 1, 2007 Report Posted January 1, 2007 I picked up the Capitol set in the August sale at Mosaic. I'm not sure I have enough interest in the Condon to go for it. The Capitol set is big of course but very interesting because of the sheer variety of musicians presented. Not all of it is good , discs 1-4 have a far slice of average Dixie (Nappy Lamare) or barrel-house piano ( Armand Hug) which loses it's appeal after a few listens. Buy without caution only if you like this sort of stuff. On the other hand the Bud Freeman session sounds very modern almost Tristano-like, ...wonderful. No regrets here overall.... Quote
J Larsen Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 Both sets just arrived at my office. I am unfamiliar with most of the music, but the Capitol Box has a beautiful book. I'll start digging into these tonight. Quote
kenny weir Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 I'll probably order the Capitol set after a few more days of dithering.' I've had the Condon set for about six months. It's weird one. There's much for me to love - all of disc one with Freeman, Wettling and so on; Hackett; Butterfield. But there's too much Rampart Street Paraders for me to handle. And the Dick Cary and McPartland soundtrack stuff is kooky fun, but a little goes a long way for me. Lee Wiley is just not my bag. And the Jimmy Dorsey is far and away, IMNSHO, the most awful of anything on any Mosaic I have - or any other box set for that matter! Quote
J Larsen Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 I've listened to the first two discs of the Capitol set. So far, I am not regretting the purchase (though even if I had hated it, it would presumably come in handy for trading purposes later on). It is a pretty weird set, in that even on the first two discs there is a wealth of styles. I pretty much hate the vocal tracks (except for the one with Billy Holiday on disc 1), but the rest is at minimum interesting and often very entertaining. So far, it does not strike me as essential, but certainly a worth purchase. Of course, I still have ten discs to go... Quote
J Larsen Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 I have to say, the more I dig into the Capitol set, the more I enjoy it. I'm not a huge dixieland guy in general, but there are some really fun examples of the style in this set. And I've even found some non-Holiday vocal tracks that I dig. This one is looking like more and more of a keeper. Quote
J Larsen Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 The Condon Mob box is now running low. FWIW, I find it to be a mixed bag. I like discs 3 and 4, disc 5 is fine, some of the others aren't really my thing at all (especially the vocal tracks). Quote

I shouldn't spend that much money right now, with their horrendous 30$ of shipping for whatever you order... but I want that one (I've had the Capitol for several years). Quote

You know, I think that eye roll thing is pretty rude and unneccesary. I obviously made a small, easy to parse out error in the course of taking a couple minutes out of an extremely busy day at work to post what I thought might be valuable information to a couple people around here. right back at you. sidewinder Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 Being a bopmeister, I'll probably pass on this Condon set. I have the earlier set on vinyl but although I enjoy it, it's not one I reach for frequently. Having said that, I'll probably get a bout of 'trigger finger'.. Quote

Maybe us 'Yurapeans' should club together and buy a ticket for someone (me? ) to go over to Stamford and buy a bulk purchase of sets for us all, in person, and maybe save money on P&P? I'll see your and raise you one . Sorry, didn't mean to be rude--just trying to make a correction with a smile. I guess I picked the wrong one. I just wanted to make sure that people who still want this set are aware that it has moved from "running low" to "last chance" so they don't miss the chance to get it. Quote
