Aggie87
Good interview with Steven Wilson on the Goldmine website. I think this is an apt description of PT today: "an original, ear-catching milieu that resides at the intersection of progressive, metal and ambient music." Matthew
Porcupine Tree: Nil Recurring. Just don't like it. Might be time for Steve Wilson to rethink what he's doing with PT, he seems to be at a dead end now. He did a major push for Fear of a Blank Planet to make PT a popular band, emphasizing cd sales, playing the entire cd during the concert tour, and it didn't work. Might be time to close shop and move on, the metal thing isn't working.
Aggie87
Aggie: You going when PT hits Texas? Bought my ticket online last night for the Houston show on Saturday! Anybody else seen PT on the current tour? sidenote - Is Ticketmaster getting worse? The ticket price is $16, yet with all of Ticketmaster's charges, the final price is $28. That's an additional 75% of the ticket price in order processing and "convenience" charges!
Aggie87
Great show last night! The band was "on", and the club was packed (I don't think sold-out, but very close to it - 1000+). They are still emphasizing their more current, heavier material, but they did pull out a few gems that I loved hearing - Dark Matter & Waiting from "Signify", and A Smart Kid from "Stupid Dream". They also played "Drown With Me", which was a song left off of In Absentia (SW said he wasn't sure why it was left off now, in hindsight). Anesthetize was fantastic live, as was Sleep Together. Setlist Fear of a Blank Planet What Happens Now? Sound of Muzak Sentimental Cheating the Polygraph Anesthetize (SW called this "Annie's Thighs...LOL) Open Car Dark Matter Drown with Me A Smart Kid Way Out of Here Sleep Together Encore: Waiting Phase One Blackest Eyes Halo They're in Dallas tonight, Atlanta tomorrow, and then it's off for the European tour. If you have time, check them out - great show!
BFrank
Hey Ag, I downloaded "Signify" from eMusic. Pretty interesting on first listen. I'll keep my eye out for other stuff of theirs. Speaking of Ticketmaster......I'll do ANYthing to avoid buying tickets from them or any other large, rip-off ticket agency. It's scandalous and I'm sure it doesn't help ticket sales (for the less popular attractions, anyway). I've found that you can usually get tickets, one way or another, from the venue itself for a lot cheaper.

I agree, I would rather stick bamboo shoots under my fingernails than pay Ticketmaster anything. This particular venue was also selling tickets at their box office. But it's in Houston, and they only sold at the window, not over the phone/internet. If I lived in Houston I would have gone that route for sure. Signify is a very good album. If you like that after a few more spins, check out Stupid Dream after that. It's the one that came next, and is great! The most recent albums that PT has put out are a bit different than Signify, in that they're quite a bit heavier, with more metal influences. Still good, but I prefer the stretch from Signify through Lightbulb Sun & Recordings.
Uncle Skid
Signify has definitely grown on me since I first got it... track #5 (Waiting) in particular stands out for me. BFrank -- the Blackfield record (also on EMusic) is very good as well.

I was headphoning Signify tonight on my iPod clone and it sounded even better. Ag, I hear ya on the Tix-master bamboozlement. I guess the only thing worse is buying from a ticket "broker". Aggie87
Steven Wilson has a new Bass Communion release due out in January, I believe, called "Pacific Codex". It's already come out on vinyl, but this will be the cd/dvd-a release. The guy who does alot of PT/SW artwork, Carl Glover, described the music: The CD sounds like a soundtrack for a slowly sinking battleship making it's way down the Mariana Trench, whilst experiencing impossible levels of pressure on it's disintegrating hull. That's intriguing!
BFrank
eMusic just added "Up the Downstair (Special Edition)" and "On the Sunday of Life" ... and removed "Signify" (that's ashame). Of course, it might not have been emu's decision.
Matthew
Good news: I was finally able to find a copy of Moonloop for a reasonable price after looking for a long time. I ignored Aggie's advice to pre-order when it came out, and I wound up out of the loop when I wanted it. I hope it's good.

I like it, but tend to forget about it when I'm reaching for some PT to spin. I guess cuz it's so skinny, it escapes my glance. Uncle Skid
eMusic just added "Up the Downstair (Special Edition)" and "On the Sunday of Life" ... and removed "Signify" (that's ashame). Of course, it might not have been emu's decision. Glad I got "Signify" before it disappeared. I downloaded "Up the Downstair" a few days ago, and really like it. Definitely different than their later stuff -- a little lighter, more ethereal and melodic. eMusic also now has The Sky Moves Sideways (Special Edition): "Dislocated Day and The Moon Touches Your Shoulder are new mixes with Gavin Harrison replacing the programmed drums with real drums. Moonloop is a hybrid version which contains all the music from the original Sky Moves Sideways CD release, but also 3 minutes that only appeared within a different edit that was issued only on the Moonloop EP." Uncle Skid
Signify is back on EMusic, now as the two-CD "Special Edition". The special editions of "Coma Divine" and "Stupid Dream" are also there.

Aggie87
Well, I don't think this is the same PT Live album that is being planned for later in the year, but here's some more good news, from SW HQ: "We Lost the Skyline": On the 4th October 2007 Porcupine Tree arrived for an in-store performance and signing session at Park Avenue CDs in Orlando, Florida, with 200 fans also in attendance. Although it was originally planned that the full band would play, lack of space dictated that it was only the 2 guitarists / singers Steven Wilson and John Wesley who delivered an impromptu performance, including many songs rarely (if ever) played by the band, making for a very special and intimate show. Fortunately this one-off performance was captured by a remote recording facility and the complete 8 song, 33 minute show is now being released in a mail order only CD, with a digipack sleeve created by photographer Lasse Hoile and designer Carl Glover. The CD will be available to pre-order soon from the PT Store (please do NOT email to ask when), and is expected to ship in the week commencing 11th Feb. Dutch vinyl specialists ToneFloat will also release a quality 180gm vinyl edition of We Lost the Skyline in a gatefold sleeve, with a limited and numbered edition of 1,000 copies on marbled vinyl, and a regular edition on black vinyl. These editions will be released on 18th March, but will also be available to pre-order soon from the ToneFloat website. The Porcupine Tree store will also stock the vinyl editions once they are released. Full track listing for the album is: 1. the sky moves sideways (4.02) 2. even less (3.27) 3. stars die (4.33) 4. waiting (3.52) 5. normal (4.52) 6. drown with me (4.09) 7. lazarus (4.29) 8. trains (4.04) Edited January 26, 2008 by Aggie87

Aggie87
Good news - The Lightbulb Sun reissue (CD+DVDA) is available for pre-order from Burning Shed, and shipping 7 April. What's nice here (to me) is that in addition to the remaster/remix and the DVDA, they are including the original stereo mix. And the bonus material (from Recordings) is great too - especially "Buying New Soul". DISC ONE (CD) : 2007 stereo mix 1. Lightbulb Sun (5.31) 2. How is Your Life Today? (2.46) 3. Four Chords That Made a Million (3.36) 4. Shesmovedon (5.14) 5. Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before it is Recycled (4.49) 6. The Rest Will Flow (3.18) 7. Hatesong (8.30) 8. Where We Would Be (4.13) 9. Russia On Ice (13.05) 10. Feel So Low (5.22) DISC TWO (DVDA) : 5.1 surround sound and high resolution 24-bit stereo 1. Feel So Low (5.22) BONUS MATERIAL ON DVDA - Disappear 5.1 mix (3.40) - Buying New Soul 5.1 mix (10.26) - Cure For Optimism 5.1 mix (6.36) - Original 2000 stereo album mix / master The PT website mentions that for U.S. customers, they may be able to get it cheaper from Amazon when it's available there, due to the weak U.S. dollar right now. I don't think it's officially released until 21 April though...if that matters.
Aggie87
In addition to the recently released "Pacific Codex", SW has another Bass Communion release due this summer, titled "Molotov and Haze". Fans of Fripp's soundscapes would enjoy Bass Communion, I think. Uncle Skid
:o Thanks for the update, Ag. I'm listening to PT right now (Warszawa). This is the first time I've listened to any PT in at least six months or so. Very weird that this thread resurfaces now! Wilson's influence on Opeth still fascinates me. I've been on a metal binge lately, and PT sounds positively mellow compared to some of the their stuff.
