ejp626 Posted December 25, 2006 Report Posted December 25, 2006 Well, from my significant other and the rest of the family, I got nuthin. We are preparing to move in a few more months and decided not to do gifts. Now I did get her a couple of CDs, but I really didn't get anything from her. I did get a few things for myself, sent to a friend, which I will retrieve after the move: Horace Tapscott - Dial B for Barbara Reptet - Do This Andrew Hill - solo Select Tati - Playtime So a fairly low-key Christmas, even by my standards. The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 25, 2006 Report Posted December 25, 2006 My wife and I agreed not to get each other anything this year; she's going to buy what she wants; I'm going to buy a CD recorder, when I can get around the shops and find a good deal. I've got record tokens, however, that I can spend at leisure. And, from my daughter, I have the first three in the series, and I'm a sucker for a strong fantasy. MG Quote
jazzbo Posted December 25, 2006 Report Posted December 25, 2006 I got a new wedding band from my wife, not expensive but nice, I had outgrown my first one. My dad sent me a big check, and my father in law an even BIGGER check, but I have to bank those. This last year was the most expensive year I've ever had due to health and travel expenses, and my wife's income is seriously diminished. . . I need that money in the bank! A friend gave me the Armstrong All Stars dvd in the Jazz Icons series, and I'm really enjoying it! For myself I bought the Ellington Mosaic that was released this month. . . it's awesome. Quote
GA Russell Posted December 25, 2006 Report Posted December 25, 2006 My family doesn't try to give me CDs. My sister gave me a check, however, which may go to Your Music. I got the new Bob Newhart book, a book by George MacDonald Fraser (whom I've never read so I'm looking forward to starting this one) and from LL Bean two shirts, two sweaters and a gift card. Quote

J Larsen Posted December 25, 2006 Report Posted December 25, 2006 My grandmother sent me a check which is really embarrassing because she is poor and I'm not (anymore). However, I fully intend to use it because rejecting a gift is usually a terrible thing to do. She needs to feel like she gave me something. A friend gave me a Tivoli clock/radio as an early xmas gift last month. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 26, 2006 Report Posted December 26, 2006 (edited) My grandmother used to send me money when I was in college in Chicago. Each of us needed the money, I kept sending the checks back to her, and I meant well but I think I angered her. She meant me to have the money! I didn't mean to anger her. I understand now looking back because I think I'm a lot like her tempermentally and intellectually. I really miss her! You're doing the right thing. . . . Edited December 26, 2006 by jazzbo Quote

paul secor Posted December 26, 2006 Report Posted December 26, 2006 (edited) Just a few things - my wife and my family say that it's difficult to get me gifts. (& they're right - I'm too particular.) But I received a few DVDs: Renoir's Boudou Saved from Drowning Northern Exposure - 3rd Season The Up Series - 7 Up through 42 Up and 49 Up - I'd seen the first 6 Up films at theatres when they came out, missed 49 Up when it was shown this fall. plus a couple of shirts that I picked out. Big Al Posted December 26, 2006 Report Posted December 26, 2006 Best present EVER: my wife bought me a brick! Not just any brick, mind you: this brick will have my name and my son's name on it, and will be placed on the walkway of the new Arlington Public Library that is opening up the street from us. I've been using the APL system for as long as I can remember, and for her to do this was thoughtful above and beyond the norm!!! Also got the Trane box, an Animaniacs DVD, the Match Game DVD, the new Philip Yancey book, $70 worth of Half Price Books gift cards, the new Vince Gill CD, a Borders gift card, a Barnes & Noble gift card, a new toaster. Very thankful for it all! Quote

Dan Gould Posted December 26, 2006 Report Posted December 26, 2006 Books: Revolutionary Characters, by an author whose name escapes me - its a series of biographical essays of various Founding Fathers. I bought it for my brother and looking through it decided to put it on my own list. The Lorraine Gordon -VV memoirs Little Green Men, by Christopher Buckley. If its half as funny as That Ain't No Way To Treat a First Lady, should be lots of fun. DVDs: All three volumes in the American Folk Blues Festival series The Messengers and Basie Jazz Icon concerts a three disc Montreux blues DVD set, Santana Presents. I'm not a fan of his, but the basic idea is full concerts by Buddy Guy, Gatemouth Brown and one other guy, with Santana joining for the last couple of songs in each set. Should be good CDs: Kevin McKendree, who plays a rolling blues piano for Delbert McClinton, has two self-produced CDs my wife got from his website. Should be good. Magic Sam, Sweet Home Chicago Junior Wells, Hoodoo Man Blues Albert King, Live Wire/Blues Power, Wednesday Night in San Francisco, Thursday Night in San Francisco T-Bone Walker, T-Bone Blues Little Walter, The Blues World Of the last Steve Davis Criss Cross CD, the one with Hargrove and Bernstein in the misc. category: couple of shirts Terry cloth robe Starbucks sampler There were also a number of CDs, DVDs and one book that didn't meet minimum requirements (they weren't blues or jazz) so they'll go back to Amazon or Borders this week. Dan Gould Posted December 26, 2006 Report Posted December 26, 2006 Dangerous Dan I thought you were getting a mosaic of some sort? SS1 Actually, in that poll thread I announced that because my interests have turned so strongly towards the blues, and True Blue offers a lot of excellent CDs and DVDs, I gave Mom a list of items that totalled to about what a big box Mosaic would cost. Pete B Posted December 26, 2006 Report Posted December 26, 2006 My good wife made sure the new Ellington Mosaic was under our tree! Quote
