bertrand Posted December 24, 2006 Report Posted December 24, 2006 I usually don't upgrade my McMaster Blue Notes to RVGs. However, I did get Point Of Departure, Speak No Evil and Juju because of the bonus cuts. Are there any other RVGs that have more tracks than the McMaster? The only other one I know is Johnny Griffin's A Blowing Session. Thanks, Bertrand. Quote
Quincy Posted December 25, 2006 Report Posted December 25, 2006 (edited) Not much help, but here's a list of RVGs from Truebluemusic. You can at least scope out your favorites. Of the ones coming in Feb., Stanley Turrentine's The Spoiler and Duke Pearson's The Right Touch will have bonus tracks. No bonus tracks mentioned for the March releases. edited to change Right Track to Right Touch. Just 3 letters need to be changed. T**c* Edited December 25, 2006 by Quincy Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted December 25, 2006 Report Posted December 25, 2006 whawtatwhawtatwhartwa you mean duke pearson THE RIGHT TOUCH!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!? do you guys know what the bonus cuts are? from a different session than the album, eg. as they did on Duke pearson and his big band, or maybe an alt. take of chili peppers???!?!! ***THAT WOULD BE THE BEST!!!!**** Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted December 25, 2006 Report Posted December 25, 2006 OPOOOOOOOOOo i just looked up SPOILER-- D.P's all over that too! finally the duke is getting some respect. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted December 25, 2006 Report Posted December 25, 2006 IS STAN T. THE ONLY BLUE NOTE ARTIST WHO CONSISTENTLY MADE BLUENOTE RECORDS FROM THE 60s 70s, AND THEN consistently made lps **THRU** THE EIGHTIES? (as depicted in his discography) Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted December 25, 2006 Report Posted December 25, 2006 Speak Like a Child has two or three bonus tracks, the McMaster had none. One of the bonus tracks features an extended "solo-piano" piano solo (is that how you say that?), that is nothing short of stunning. All the bonus tracks were also featured on the complete Herbie BN leader-date box, but the RVG was the first time the entire session had been released as an idividual title. Quote
Z-Man Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 The RVG of Herbie's Inventions & Dimensions has an alternate of Mimosa that was only previously available on the BN box. The RVG of The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol 2 has five cuts that I believe were previously unissued. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 Horce Silver's "Doin' the Thing" has extra tracks. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 JOS at Smalls Paradise had several tracks that were never issued on CD at all, only LP in Japan. Quote
vaschaefer Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 Does anyone have any scuttlebutt on whether Blue Note is planning/considering an RVG edition of Bud Powell: The Complete Blue Note and Roost Recordings, dated 1994? Best wishes, Virginia A. Schaefer Quote
paul secor Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 The Blue Note Buds have already been RVG'd - individually, not as a box. As for the Roost sides - ? Welcome to the forum. Quote
vaschaefer Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 Thanks for the reply and welcome, Paul. I've been reading posts of interest for a while and now emerge briefly from lurker-dom . I'm aware that the five volumes of Amazing Bud Powell have been released in RVG editions (with some previously unissued cuts added to vols. 1-2). However, as suggested by your message, I'm interested in getting the Roost recordings without having to buy the entire Complete Blue Note and Roost box in the unremastered edition to do so. (The 1947 Roost session appears available elsewhere, but not the later one.) Will keep looking for the least redundant solution... By the way, my immediate motivation is work on a book on Powell's music (historical and theoretical analysis -- not a biography). Needless to say, I'm at the front end of the project. Best wishes, Virginia Quote
jazzbo Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 Welcome Virginia. The Roost sides were done in a really nice lp facimile edition by Japanese Blue Note about three years ago or so. . . I have it and am glad I do! It may be still "around" somewhere. Quote

Avoid the earlier single disc issue. It plays at the wrong speed. Quote

The answer is that the 1990 CD plays at the wrong speed and that this was corrected on the 4CD box. Quote
