flat5 Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 (edited) A friend emailed me to help him find the lyrics to the old song 'Idaho'. We found nothing useful using Google or the tune books I have. He would also like to know if there are jazz tunes built from the changes (chords) of this tune. Anyone want to help? please. Alexander Hawkins Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 Bean Stalkin' from Coleman Hawkins and Roy Eldridge JATP 1957 is based on it, I believe. Nice easy blowing changes! Quote
Chas Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 "Away beyond the hills in Idaho Where yawning canyons greet the sun As it smiles above the trees in Idaho To say another night is done Warm summer winds toss the waving grain Calling me back to my home again To dream sweet memories of long ago Beyond the hills in Idaho" Quote
JSngry Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 There's a commonly played chromatic whole note counter line to "Idaho" that's identical(?) to the counter melody of "Well, You Needn't". What that has to do w/anything, I'm not sure, but I think it's interesting. Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 I don't think it fits the whole way - it's a C over the F chord; C# over the F+; D over the F6; and then I think the D best satys (over an F# in the bass) for a D8, before a ii-V back to F. Or something like that (can't really remember - haven't played it for an age). In any case, I agree - it's a cool line! Quote

flat5 Posted December 17, 2006 Author Report Posted December 17, 2006 Thank you, fellas. I'll pass on the information to Tony Heimer. A good hard working piano player from the US who now lives in Spain. I know the line you mean, JS. C up to E in repeated half notes, except the E. Coleman Hawkins plays it on the Riverside recording. (Genius of Modern Music?) Sometimes I do too :-) Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted December 17, 2006 Report Posted December 17, 2006 My favorite Idaho is Bud and Griff on Xanadu. If you have it, check it out. Quote
