Quincy Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 (edited) Okay. . . how do you feel about the Clarke Boland Big Band? Some of their lps qualify as big band hard bop! (Plus) It took you 3 posts to bring this up? Good stuff! (and thanks!) Edited December 13, 2006 by Quincy Quote
jazzbo Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 Okay. . . how do you feel about the Clarke Boland Big Band? Some of their lps qualify as big band hard bop! (Plus) It took you 3 posts to bring this up? Good stuff! (and thanks!) Well, I was scared away from the use of the term "hard bop" really. I mean. . .that's a very narrow definition for SOME people. And not a lot of CBBB material fits that so narrowly. Quote
AllenLowe Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 wait, Dimitry - do mean "hard bop" big bands, or hard "bop big bands," as in groups playing difficult music (or maybe having reached full arousal from the good looking ladies in the front row)? Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 JJ Johnson's RCA big band recordings would fit the bill. I really dig "J.J.!", recently reissued as a Mosaic single. Tubby Hayes's "Tubbs' Tours" and "100% Proof" should still be available. Very nice hard bop big band. I prefer "Tubbs' Tours" ever slightly. Kevin Quote
etherbored Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 i wonder how many people here are hip to benny golson's "stockholm sojourn"... it's a great date that has a big band utilized more as an orchestra in that hip golson way. recommended, -e- Quote

marcello Posted December 14, 2006 Report Posted December 14, 2006 Don't know if this is on cd but the opener, "Disaproachment" is a blast! Quote
king ubu Posted December 14, 2006 Report Posted December 14, 2006 Ra's "Jazz in Silhouette" is the feghing shit! This here might qualify, too, although it's only partly a big band date (rest is quartet and sextet or septet): Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 14, 2006 Report Posted December 14, 2006 Second the mention of Griffin's big soul band. And Gerald Wislon, of course. Here's a few more Cannonball Adderley - African waltz Blue Mitchell - Smooth as the wind Melton Mustapha - Boiling point Louie Bellson with Blue Mitchell - Jam with Blue Mitchell Jimmy Smith - Bashin' Sonny Stitt & the Top Brass And what about Dizzy's great big band of the late '40s? Goodness me! MG Quote
king ubu Posted December 14, 2006 Report Posted December 14, 2006 African Waltz is quite fine! Two of the three albums of this Milt Jackson/Ray Brown Verve twofer are big band, too, one featuring Cannonball: This one's another good one, with Holman, Giuffre and other great soloists, and a slight west coast flavour: Quote
AllenLowe Posted December 14, 2006 Report Posted December 14, 2006 (edited) well, I can't get an answer so I will assume we are referring to a third possibility - old bop big-band records hardened by manufacture and time. For that Dimitry will have to turn to 78s which, though breakable, are made of a much harder substance than either LPs or CDs. Edited December 14, 2006 by AllenLowe Quote

(GREAT thread, BTW. ) Quote
etherbored Posted December 14, 2006 Report Posted December 14, 2006 i think it's (the golson date, above) under a lot of listeners radar... -e- Quote
