chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted December 10, 2006 Report Posted December 10, 2006 on THE BEST OF DONALD BYRD cd, there is a live version of (falling like) dominos. My question is: did blue note record a whole live set of DB and if so was it ever released- what a rare groove cd THAT would make! the reason i bring it up is cause i have seen that track on the best of but never any other album-- does anyone have the info to this, perhaps thru consulting the bn discography book? i dunno- ok thank u! JSngry Posted December 10, 2006 Report Posted December 10, 2006 BTW - here's a piece of Donald Byrd trivia - Blue Note took out a full page ad for Black Byrd in ,of all places, National Lampoon. It was a full black page with a white cartoon drawing of a fedora-wearing crow, and the copy was sometihing like "Have we got some blues for you". I kid you not. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted December 10, 2006 Author Report Posted December 10, 2006 OOOOOOOOOOOHhhhhhhhhhhhhh YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA blue note live at the roxy- oh yeah! i have to finally get that one now! shouldnt pay more than a buck for it, huh? oh yeah and ive seen that ad i thnk, ive seen a lot of 70s D.B trade ads..... CJ Shearn Posted December 11, 2006 Report Posted December 11, 2006 Blue Note Live at the Roxy isn't even worth it, Aric. I have a casette copy from my uncle's vinyl, and its truly one of the worst Blue Note albums I've ever heard. A few good performances, like a couple Ronnie Laws solos on a few tunes but its not even worth spending a $1 dude. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted December 11, 2006 Author Report Posted December 11, 2006 is that so..... Quote
CJ Shearn Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 yeah, the music just really reeks. The album starts and ends with the "Blue Note hits a new note" schtick, by the guy who used to do the CBS sports voice overs. Quote
Swinging Swede Posted March 1, 2008 Report Posted March 1, 2008 There is actually a lost Donald Byrd live album on Blue Note. On the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1973 Blue Note recorded five of its current artists. Four albums were released by Bobby Hutcherson, Ronnie Foster, Marlena Shaw and Bobbi Humphrey, but one set remains unissued: Donald Byrd Group Fonce Mizell (tp) Donald Byrd (tp, flh) Allan Barnes (ts, fl) Nathan Davis (ts, ss) Kevin Toney (el-p) Larry Mizell (syn) Barney Perry (el-g) Henry Franklin (el-b) Keith Killgo (d, vo) Ray Armando (cga, per) 'Montreux Jazz Festival', "Casino De Montreux", Switzerland, July 5, 1973 Poco-Mania Blue Note unissued You've Got It Bad, Girl - Untitled, No. 3 - Black Byrd - Flight Time - Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 1, 2008 Report Posted March 1, 2008 Fonce Mizell (tp) Donald Byrd (tp, flh) Allan Barnes (ts, fl) Nathan Davis (ts, ss) Kevin Toney (el-p) Larry Mizell (syn) Barney Perry (el-g) Henry Franklin (el-b) Keith Killgo (d, vo) Ray Armando (cga, per) 'Montreux Jazz Festival', "Casino De Montreux", Switzerland, July 5, 1973 Poco-Mania Blue Note unissued You've Got It Bad, Girl - Untitled, No. 3 - Black Byrd - Flight Time - only a pedant would not want to shit their ears all over this. though these are pretty boring tunes. It's interesting to consider why George Butler may have thought this not worth issuing. It couldn't have been because the music was poor - Butler released plenty of duff albums on BN. And indeed, this looks to be right up BN's seventies street - Blackbyrd members, Mizells, Franklin; what more could George have been looking for? Perhaps the sound is fucked. MG Quote
Swinging Swede Posted March 3, 2008 Report Posted March 3, 2008 There is actually even more: Donald Byrd And The Blackbyrds Donald Byrd (tp) Allan Barnes (ss, ts, vo) Kevin Toney (p, el-p, syn, vo) Barney Perry (el-g, vo) Joe Hall (el-b, vo) Keith Killgo (d, vo) Perk Jacobs (cga, per, vo) "The Roxy Theatre", Los Angeles, CA, March 2, 1974 tk.1 Black Byrd Blue Note unissued tk.2 Livin' For The City - tk.3 Lansana's Priestess - tk.4 Witch Hunt - tk.5 Poco Mania - tk.6 You've Got It Bad, Girl - tk.7 Reggins - tk.8 A Summer Love - tk.9 Do It Fluid - tk.10 unknown title - tk.11 - - And, as was mentioned earlier, two Byrd tracks were on the Blue Note Live At The Roxy album. But more was recorded, as could be expected. Donald Byrd And The Blackbyrds Donald Byrd (tp) Stephen Johnson (ts, vo) Kevin Toney (el-p, org, syn, vo) Orville Saunders (el-g, vo) Joe Hall (el-b, vo) Keith Killgo (d, vo) "Central Park", Los Angeles, CA, July 19, 1976 17741 Places And Spaces Blue Note BN-LA 663-J2 17742 (Fallin' Like) Doninoes - unknown titles unissued * Various Artists - Blue Note Live At The Roxy (Blue Note BN-LA 663-J2) So maybe three lost Donald Byrd live albums on Blue Note. andybleaden Posted March 30, 2020 Report Posted March 30, 2020 Digging deep to bring this back to life. I was listening to the Live at Montreux material yesterday...the Bobby Hutcherson and got to wondering what else was on during this festival from Blue Note other than those issued and the Donald Byrd...which we have seen on You tube and guess what...there was a setlist https://www.setlist.fm/festival/1973/montreux-jazz-festival-1973-43d6b313.html And the other gigs on that day include one by Alphonse Mouzon and strangely enough Barney Kessel! Alphonse is not everyones cup of tea here but for those who don't mind a bit of Funky Snakefoot there were 4 tracks Earth Play Video Antonia Play Video Mouzon Folk-Song Play Video Macrobian Wonder why Blue Note did not seem to record them?
