Bol Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 Ethan Iverson's blog has got me curious about the 1970s recordings by Keith Jarrett with Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, and Paul Motian. So, here is a philistine question: Does Jarrett vocalize (i.e. moan, screech, etc.) on these early recordings as he does in the more recent ECM recordings? I'm afraid that except in the case of Bud Powell, vocalizing by pianists is a real turnoff for me -- even a deal-breaker in many cases. I wish that I weren't so shallow and can overlook things like this, but there it is. I can't help it, and I've long ceased struggling. So, any info about this issue would be appreciated. Quote
JSngry Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 He probably does, but I've always been too wrapped up in the music to notice. So, maybe he doesn't! Dude - it's Dewey. Screw Keith's moanings (if there are any). Quote
Guy Berger Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 He does, but not as loudly as on the ECM recordings. I think it's less noticeable on some of the earlier Impulse albums, like Fort Yawuh. This music is fantastic. Guy Quote
B. Goren. Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 IMHO, his 1970s recordings for Impulse are his best recordings ever. Quote
RDK Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 He does moan - it's never bothered me - but since the music is louder and denser it's pretty hard to notice. Quote
GregK Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 I've never noticed if he does or not. The music is excellent though. Good luck finding it! Quote

GregK Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 The other Impulse one, Mysteries, isn't. I've had a tough time trying to get it Quote

Rosco Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 I don't recall noticing it particularly on the Impulses. That's not to say there isn't any. As has been said, you'll be too wrapped up in the music to notice. The Impulse sides by that band are essential, but don't overlook The Survivor's Suite on ECM. Oh... Dewey might be vocalising through the saxophone. Is that a problem? Quote
