Free For All Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 Check it out and discuss Nice to see some old favorites like Roy Haynes, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman and Bob Brookmeyer in there. Also glad to see the Trio Beyond "Saudades" in there. That really is a great side. I haven't heard ANY of the "Best Contemporary" nominations. Quote

GA Russell Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 Sonny, Please is nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, and it's not even in the stores yet. As I recall, there was some controversy a couple of years ago about a Barbra Streisand album being nominated even though it was released after the deadline, which as I recall was September 30. Now we have Sonny selling CDs off his website and at concerts, then later for downloads, then later still at hard copy retailers. I suppose he beat the deadline when he offered the album on his website. This sure is a strange way of doing things. It seems to me that this gradual roll-out eliminates the excitement generated by a new release, particularly when the initial release on the website is done as quietly as it was in this case. I've read that most CD sales occur when the CD is brand new (I have no idea if that is true for jazz), and this gradual roll-out philosophy seems to me to be counterproductive. Quote
kulu se mama Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 will someone please explain to me how dylan's "modern times" does not get an album of the year nod, but justin timberlake does. Quote
sal Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 will someone please explain to me how dylan's "modern times" does not get an album of the year nod, but justin timberlake does. That's insane. Paul Simon's "Surprise" didn't get nominated either. Quote

Its also so unblievably by far the best record nominated in that category. I know its obvious, but you have to so completely and utterly out of touch with everything that has ever been considered music to nominate 'My Humps.' Not shocking, but it damn well should be. Rooster_Ties Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 Yeah, no shit. "My Humps" got a grammy nomination??? Didn't even notice that until you pointed it out. My brain couldn't get around that concept, even if it tried. Quote
RDK Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 I'm sure i've heard My Humps played somewhere, but I honestly wouldn't know it unless you pointed it out to me. I guess I'm turning into one of those guys... Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 Did he release anything this year? Indeed he did. Metheny/Mehldau was released on Sept. 12. I know. Hence the smiley! This must be the end of a streak... no Metheny nomination! Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 For those still not getting the joke, here's Death Cab For Cutie - I'll Follow You Into The Dark. One man, one guitar -- recorded in freakin' MONO -- so it's not as if there's even a "duo" of channels to get the nomination for "Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal" (It is on an album by a group, and it is billed as the name of the group -- so technically it probably qualifies. Still pretty funny!! ) Quote
