Man with the Golden Arm Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 after looking at the over-rated thread it seems I like that genre best. Sam Rivers - "Phewwsha Schwing Song" Sonny Clark - "Cool Struttin'" (complete) Horace Silver - "Finger Poppin'" Hank Mobley - "WorkOut" Jackie McLean - "Jackie's Bag" Sonny Clark - "My Conception" Art Blakey - "Mosaic" Bobby Hutcherson - "Happenings" Big John Patton - "Got A Good Thing Goin'" (and I'm taking that for the cover, too!) Monk - "Genius" complete TOCJ 66119-20 Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 (edited) Is Nigeria the one with Blakey going apeshit during Clarke's solo on "It Ain't Necessarily" so? That tune is soooo feghing great, it overshadows the whole 2CD set with these Green/Clark sessions for me. That's the one. "Apeshit" is an appropriate description! Dead on in your assessment of that set; this track makes it worth the cost of the set alone. I can still remember the first days after I got that set.... I kept playing that tune again and again, cranking up the volume! Me three! I'd even call folks up to my studio space here an make them sit for it. But I just really want to hear the next few minutes that rolled on despite the knob fade. Is it just me? Edited December 6, 2006 by Man with the Golden Arm Quote

paul secor Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Three Sounds, Moods Stanley Turrentine, Blue Hour John Coltrane, Blue Train Hank Mobley, Soul Station Jackie McLean, Bluesnik Dexter Gordon, Doin Allright Ike Quebec, Blue & Sentimental Art Blakey, Moanin' Donald Byrd, Royal Flush Lou Donaldson, The Natural Soul It was pretty easy picking until I got to number 10 and realized that I didn't have a Grant Green, a Lee Morgan, a Wayne Shorter. So I picked a Lou Donaldson instead. Good to see that someone included an Ike Q recording on their list. Quote

Man, I shoulda put Nigeria on my list; but what to take off? Quote
couw Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 that's already ten, and they include ... no Silver (Stylings? no idea which I'd pick there... maybe Song for My Father?)... take Cape Verdean Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 (edited) In alphabetical order Lou Donaldson – Alligator bogaloo Grant Green – Remembering Grant Green – Nigeria Fred Jackson – Hootin’ ‘n tootin’ John Patton – The way I feel Freddie Roach – All that’s good Jimmy Smith – At the organ vol 1 (the one with “Summertime”) Lonnie Smith – Live at Club Mozambique Don Wilkerson – Elder Don Don Wilkerson – Shoutin’ So, I’ve had to sacrifice Stanley Turrentine – Rough & tumble Kenny Burrell – Midnight blue Hank Mobley – Thinking of home Ike Quebec – Heavy soul Baby Face Willette – Stop & listen Sonny Clark trio All of which are near misses. And then all the other Greens, Pattons, Donaldsons, Lonnies, Stanleys etc etc This is all only possible on the basis that I'll be able to take 10 Prestiges, 10 Chesses, 10 Riversides, 10 Pac Jazzes, 10 Atlantics and 10 Muses. I could certainly live on a desert island with 70 albums MG Hm, only 10 Prestiges will be hard. Can I have 50? Edited December 6, 2006 by The Magnificent Goldberg Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Nice to see LOTS of Andrew Hill and Larry Young dates on quite a number of these lists. I suspect if we ran the same poll in other circles (AAJ or JC), such would not be the case. Quote
Guest the mommy Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 roosterre, no tyrone washington??? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 (edited) roosterre, no tyrone washington??? Yeah, yeah, I thought about it (really, I did!!) -- and I very nearly included "Natural Essense". But frankly, at this point, I've listened to that album so much already, I probably wouldn't need to have a copy with me to remember. I did almost include "The Jody Grind" specifically for some Tyrone, but I already had some Woody Shaw in there (on both my Hill choices), so I didn't need "Jody" for that. I also thought about including Larry Young's "Contrasts", but I already had Mothership on my list. Damn, I just checked -- and except for otherwise unreleased material (the Trainwreck, and a Jackie McLean date), those are the only three available BN dates with Tyrone. I knew there wasn't much, but I'd forgotten just how little there was. (I also didn't want to have a list that was like 3 or 4 Hills, and 2 or 3 Youngs.) This would be a lot easier if the limit was 20 -- I'll sure say that!!! Edited December 6, 2006 by Rooster_Ties Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 After the traffic dies down, I will tally up the votes and present the overall list of Blue Note Desert Island Discs. I would also be extremely interested in which albums LOSE - ie the ones that only get 1 vote. (Several of mine, I expect ) MG Quote
