Quick correction here. None are new K2 remasters, all are reissues of previously available K2's. Most have not been available for close to a decade, though. For example, I picked up the K2 of Rollins' Next Album (a monster, stupidly overlooked record) around 1998. Great remaster - who cares if it's recent or not? Get them, they are great, and won't be around for long this time either!

the information concerning licensing came from a couple shop owners (not hiroshi) and a japan victor employee. the information concerning K2 is sheer conjecture at this point.

another correction Robert. All which were released previously as K2's are K2's again (of course) all the others are earlier remasterings (Japanese or US). I have the SuperStop information and this tell's which are 20 Bit K2's and which not. I'll post it later.

Yes, great deal! Those titles in the VICJ-23*** series were running 2,300 yen when released back in the early 90's.

Any opinions on the non-K2 versions here? I have several of these titles on my want list, and the price is right. Are the "normal" CDs using the same mastering as their US counterpart or does it have a unique mastering?

Quite a few of these are CD-only compilations that would appear to have been done originally by OJC in the US. If Sonny Stitt's "Soul People" is simply the US-mastered CD with an obi stuck on it, I don't need it. If it's differently mastered, I would want it to compare to the US CD if only because it's one of my favorite Sonny Stitt dates.

Kevin: these are not the Fantasy compilations you're talking about. JVC issued the original LP's in the 90's on VICJ-23xxx numbered cd's. These series don't list any info on the re-mastering. Manufactured in Japan from masteres owned by Fantasy USA is all I could find on these. They do have the original artwork (front and back) reproduced which is cool too. I don't think you should need them just for sonics since the Fantasy remasters are good as well.

it's not. these were mastered by japan victor engineers and i think they'd be of interest for you. my opinion is that, in most (but not all) cases they're much cleaner than their american countrparts. however, keep in mind that this is as inexpensive as japanese pressings get. this means it's affordable to be curious.

to the contrary, imho. you could push the envelope a little more and choose some shirley scott and cal tjader... otherwise, no losers in your picks. i like 'soul society' and 'seranade to a bus seat' quite a lot, but all of them are nice (although i don't know the timmons; bet it's tasty).

Sorry to say "Got to get it" is my least favourite Timmons. There's a femme voc group on some tracks which doesn't improve things. And Tom Mackintosh's arrangements don't seem entirely suitable for Timmons' style to me. Got to give Orrin credit for trying to put Bobby into a different context and he plays OK. But it just doesn't gel for me.
