Cliff Englewood Posted December 3, 2006 Report Posted December 3, 2006 I saw this listed on the Marsh site, does anyone have this or know anything about it. Looks like an excellent group but I'm sure it would have been mentioned here before if it had been available on Xanadu. WARNE MARSH QUARTET. 'The Haig Club', Hollywood, CA., December 23, 1952. Pete B Posted December 3, 2006 Report Posted December 3, 2006 It exists - I have a copy. It's a good one - I like hearing WM with a bebop pianist - HH really pushes him. Recording quality is not great but certainly listenable. I shouldn't think that this lp would be that hard to find. Quote
GA Russell Posted December 3, 2006 Report Posted December 3, 2006 Is there a story about The Haig and live recordings in 1952? I have live albums from both Gerry Mulligan and Wardell Gray that I think are from 1952, maybe 1953. The Mulligan sounds great, the Gray not so good. Am I right in believing that this one nightclub had live recordings before the other LA clubs did? I wonder if it was a policy of the club's owner to proactively invite the recording equipment in. Cliff Englewood Posted December 3, 2006 Author Report Posted December 3, 2006 (edited) Thanks Pete B/JohnS, was it ever released on CD? How does the recording quality compare to "Live at Dana Point", if of course you have "Live at Dana Point" that is. Edited December 3, 2006 by Cliff Englewood Quote
Nate Dorward Posted December 3, 2006 Report Posted December 3, 2006 I have this one on LP--a favourite. The sound's acceptable though the bass is virtually inaudible, I recall. The playing's great, though! Quote
Stereojack Posted December 3, 2006 Report Posted December 3, 2006 Is there a story about The Haig and live recordings in 1952? I have live albums from both Gerry Mulligan and Wardell Gray that I think are from 1952, maybe 1953. I believe that the live recordings at the Haig by Wardell Gray, Art Pepper, Shorty Rogers, Sonny Criss, Warne Marsh & others were made by a young amateur recordist named Bob Andrews, who began shopping the tapes around in the 1970's. Sound quality varies, but is usually acceptable. Quote
GA Russell Posted December 3, 2006 Report Posted December 3, 2006 Thanks SJ. I figured there was a story there. Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted December 3, 2006 Report Posted December 3, 2006 More recordings made at the Haig that evening of Dec. 23, 1952 (minus Warne Marsh - i.e. the rhythm section appearing as the Hampton Hawes Trio) can be found on "The Hampton Hawes Memorial Album" (Xanadu LP 161, i.e. the same label that the Warne Marsh cuts from that particular evening were released on). Pete B Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 Thanks Pete B/JohnS, was it ever released on CD? How does the recording quality compare to "Live at Dana Point", if of course you have "Live at Dana Point" that is. Not as good IMO. I think that "Dana Point" is quite good fidelity. The Xanadu is less so. Still, very listenable, excellent performances, well worth tracking down. To my knowledge, it has not been issued on cd. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 i have the warne xanadu on mp3s.... Quote
Quasimado Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 The Xanadu LP has been issued and reissued in Japan as a CD by Crown Records - not sure if it is still available. Q Quote

They included dates with the Lighthouse All Stars (with Sonny Clark and Hampton Hawes at the piano), Stan Getz. These were issued in Japan on the Vantage label along with more tapes from Andrews of Art Pepper, Al Haig and Lee Konitz, Pinky Winters and Zoot Sims, Richie Kamuca and others. Those albums remain hard to get! Quote

chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 http://lajazzinstitute.org/index.php?c=4#tbac THE BOB ANDREWS COLLECTION The Bob Andrews Collection consists of a number of open reel tapes which document the Los Angeles Jazz Scene of the 1950s. Andrews took his portable tape recorder to venues such as The Lighthouse, The Trade Winds and The Haig beginning as early as 1951 and captured numerous live performances featuring Art Pepper, Shorty Rogers, The Lighthouse All-Stars, Maynard Ferguson, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Jack Montrose, Hampton Hawes . . . Another highlight of the Andrews collection is several hours of audio from jazz performances on television including the Steve Allen Tonight Show, Stars of Jazz and various L.A. local broadcasts. WHERE IN THE HOLY HELL IS THIS WEST COAST JAZZ MUSEUM ANYWAY, I WANT TO VISIT IT! Quote

WHERE IN THE HOLY HELL IS THIS WEST COAST JAZZ MUSEUM ANYWAY, I WANT TO VISIT IT! Yeah, they have a great collection of unreleased tapes. So what? Don't think you'll be allowed to listen to it (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). I've found that the best "jazz archive" for us non-scholarly folk is on the Dime. Quote

brownie Posted December 23, 2006 Report Posted December 23, 2006 Most of the 2CD 'Chet Baker & Stan Getz - West Coast Live' out on PacificJazz was also recorded live at the Haig in June 1953 when Getz replaced Gerry Mulligan who was spending time in the can. Quote

bakeostrin Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 Hi, I was lucky enough to get this CD recently on e-bay. Regarding the Hampton Hawes Memorial Album (since it was brought up in this thread), has it ever been reissued on a Japanese CD? I am aware of the Jazz Factory reissue, but unlike the Sonny Clark and Sonny Criss Memorials, I do not believe the Hawes was reissued in Japan--anyone know for sure? I know there is a Xanadu reissues thread somewhere, but I will ask this one here (for convenience); is there a list of the Xanadu titles that were reissued on CD? I have a full list of the titles, but there is no breakdown. Some were Japanese Crown reissues in the late 80's; some Japanese reissues (mid 90's?) in mini-lp; also some French reissues (not considered legitimate by Mr. Schlitten). Any help would be appreciated. If the topic is more appropriate to the Xanadu reissues or discography thread, by all means redirect it (and me) Thanks, Baker Quote
BeBop Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 If anyone sees a reasonably priced copy of this around (CD or LP), let me know. It's one of a very few on my "want" list. Quote
