CJ Shearn Posted December 2, 2006 Report Posted December 2, 2006 (edited) from "It's Uptown" yeah its just a modal vehicle but its sooo hip................ I love the way GB just gets off on the groove generated by the drums and Lonnie'svamp. Howabout "The Borgia Stick" while your at it? Edited December 2, 2006 by CJ Shearn Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 Lots of good tunes on that record. A classic, for sure. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted December 5, 2006 Author Report Posted December 5, 2006 yes indeed. I had that on vinyl as a kid, have a free Rhapsody trial and listened to it on there, hope I get the CD's for x-mas. I would rather have an actual Columbia disc than download ya know, much nicer I think "Uptown" has my most favorite version of "Willow Weep For Me", behind JOS's version, has to be the greaziest for me Quote
Jazz Kat Posted December 5, 2006 Report Posted December 5, 2006 How come they do the same song on Cookbook and ITs Uptown? Quote
CJ Shearn Posted December 5, 2006 Author Report Posted December 5, 2006 they don't. "Bullfight" is on "It's Uptown", "The Borgia Stick" is on "Cookbook". Sorry, should have been more clear. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 5, 2006 Report Posted December 5, 2006 It would be nice if Michael Cuscuna got into those Benson/Smith recordings for Columbia. A lot of them show signs of heavy editing, so that the tunes would be short enough for radio play. A nice little Mosaic Select of "It's Uptown", "Cookbook", "Benson burner" and "Finger lickin' good soul organ", with full length unedited tracks, would go down a treat in these parts. MG Quote
andybleaden Posted December 5, 2006 Report Posted December 5, 2006 me too Had an old vinyl of Uptown and miss it Quote

CJ Shearn Posted December 5, 2006 Author Report Posted December 5, 2006 usually on Columbia sessions back then like Miles', edits are easy to hear. I would just assume that these takes were kept short to get radio time, but theres a lot of stuff packed in 4 minute tunes. I was thinking "Finger Licking Good Soul Organ" (what a dirty sounding title, but thats just me, lol) could be reissued as a Mosaic Single. Its weird just 2 cuts are on the "It's Uptown" reissue. Well, you could be right - I never heard any edits when I had a few of Miles' Columbia albums, but perhaps there weren't any on those (KOB, Quiet nights, Carnegie, Miles Ahead), so I've no comparison.
