JSngry
JSTYFGTY: SO U FEEL ABOUT MY BIRD LP LIKE ---I---- FEEL ABOUT THE COLTRANE FUNERAL BOOTLEG TAPE ON THE AYLER SET.............. Well, sorta, maybe, I guess. The Ayler gives me goosebumps. That Bird side (just the packaging, not the music), gave me the heebie-jeebies. paul secor
I have a number of Bird boots on various labels (Parktec, Elysium, Invincible, Meexa Discox) seemingly from the same source. I never found the packaging of the Parktec disturbing - perhaps slightly more bizarre than the others, but not disturbingly so. Then again, maybe that's just me. I wouldn't peg the guy in the photograph - "Dr. Claude Donkke" - as looking like he's mentally ill, but the inscription on the photo is indeed strange (or perhaps just prescient) - " To Bird - All the Verbal Jazz is yet to come - Claude". jazmaan
But even though the liner notes may be a tissue of lies, I happen to LOVE those Rose boots like Fran Staterna "Tribute from Sweden" lp and all my other Rose boots including "Bird's Perch". That long jam on "Lover Come Back to Me" is superb and very difficult to find anywhere else. I'm very sorry I didn't buy the "Bird Box" when I saw it at Tower Records for $50, but back then that was too much money for me to afford! Now I scour the Ebay listings for items like that or the "Bird's Eyes" series, but without much success. I wish there was a complete list somewhere of all the Boris Rose boots. I'd buy every one of them. Just today I saw one listed on Ebay that I'd never seen before - a live Charlie Ventura lp that claims to feature a guest appearance by Bird? Anybody here know anything about that? -Jazmaan Edited November 25, 2010 by jazmaan
BeBop
I've got that "Crazed Olaf" LP. May have the other too. I bought up a bunch of Boris Rose stuff. Have vague memories of dealing with some guy in Texas who shipped for cash. I know for sure he put out the Jazum material (airchecks, mainly). Hope to see my LPs someday soon (had been hoping for this Christmas season, but work's too busy.) Want to hear the Bird interview disc too, though I imagine most of it was recaptured on the recent Bird in Time box. A bunch of Rose stuff hit the market about two years ago. Not sure what's left. Could be pretty picked over: a couple of things I wanted were gone, gone, gone. PM me if you want seller details. Could be slow to reply. I'm in Southern Utah without regular computer access. Funny you should mention the "Bird in Time" box. I just learned about it today when I was browsing Ebay listings and I bought one! Should have it in hand soon. I listen to Phil Schapp's "Bird Flight" about once a week (Phil Schapp daily is just too much for me to handle!) so I think I've already heard most of the earlier stuff on that box, but it will be quite nice to have it all collected without Schapp's pedantic narration. That Fran Staterna "Tribute from Sweden" is still the only place I know to hear those particular Goodman/Gray airchecks. I've bought all the CD's featuring Goodman/Gray/Hasselgard but none of those Rose recordings are on them. And none sound as good as the Rose recordings. The Charlie Christian side is nice too but not quite as unique as the Wardell Gray side. As far as I can tell, all the Bird Royal Roost recordings originated with Boris Rose too? Apparently they're not truly airchecks because Rose may have bought off the house technicians to give him Pre-broadcast copies? As I recall, on the New Year's Eve broadcast Symphony Sid does say "And now we take you an hour earlier down to the Royal Roost" as if maybe there was an hour delay between the performance and the broadcast, so maybe they were cutting records there at the Roost to be broadcast an hour later? And somehow Boris Rose got ahold of the transcription discs? I always wanted to know where were all the OTHER Royal Roost broadcasts that didn't feature Bird? I know a few have survived featuring Miles and Prez. Any others? Edited November 26, 2010 by jazmaan

jazmaan
I just looked into that book. Available used on Amazon for around $55. Available at the University of Riverside library but I don't think I'll be visiting that campus anytime soon. Oh well. I have been reading more about Boris Rose archives. Posts here on Organissimo in a Mingus thread talked about some university getting them, but that thread seems to have dried up years ago. Independently of that thread, I did get those Mingus Birdland recordings off the net about a month ago. Had no idea they originated with Rose. I sure would love to read a list of all the artists in his collection. Edited November 26, 2010 by jazmaan
JSngry
are u guys familar w/ these releases- they looked 2 good (and cheap) to pass up 1) BIRDS PERCH LIVE feat. LOVER comeback to me (20 minutes) PARKTEC records, rollo, TX rec. by DR CLAUDE DONKKE- THERES A PIC OF HIM ON THE BACK w/ BIRD AND: a copy of a note from bird in which bird expresses how gassed he is at the good quality rec. he made of the 20 min lover com eback to me. Oh...my...god... I have seen that record, and there's something very weird about it. First of all, the picture isn't that cat w/Bird - it's a picture of some mentally ill looking cat who put himself in front of a blow-up of the pic of Bird & Billy Eckstine at Birdland(?) & took a picture of that. In the second place - there is no such place as "Rollo, Tx". In the third place, that note is not by Bird. Definitely not. In the fourth place, Dr. Donkke didn't make these recordings. I'm pretty sure that there is no Dr. Donkke. In the fifth place, I'm told that there's something in the occult that has to do with a donkey hoof, some sort of ritual or something. So, "Claude Donkke" could maybe be read as "clawed donkey". Admittedly, this one is a stretch, but everything else about that record is so creepy that I'm alllowing it. Back in college, I met a chick from California who had this side. She was a bit of a Bird buff, had some otehr boots, but thought this one was a little weird. When I looked at it, the "photo" of Dr. Donkke w/Bird immediately creeped me out - the photo's obviosuly a very cheap forgery, the cat really does look mentally unstable, and the "note from Bird" is desperately poorly written. I got a vibe immediately, and set about finding out of Rollo, Tx really existed. It didn't, So one thing led to another, and I found out about the alleged occult ritual (still not fully buying into that one, but...). Anyway, this is not your typical Bird bootleg. Who in the hell would go to the trouble of creating obviously fake photos & forged letters, none of which even faintly suggested the remotest chance of authenticity? Eitehr somebody with a warped sense of humor or somebody who really was a little bit or more off. The whole thing was just....creepy. Anyway, I gave the chick her record back & told her she could have it because it was weirding me out, Bird or no Bird. True story, I swear.
