Dmitry
Look at this auction. Anyone has any info on these early Japanese pressings? I had no idea Japan produced Blue NOte Lps as early as 1967...
Chuck Nessa
Sorry, I missed the '67 mention for this item. Can you help me out? When I went to work at the Jazz Record Mart in 1966 they had bootleg, Chinese lps of the BN Messengers in the used bin.
paul secor
I have a couple of 10" Japanese BN LPs (Wynton Kelly & Elmo Hope) dated 1975. The Credits read "Manufactured by United Artists Music and Records Group, Inc., Los Angeles, California 90028. Printed in U.S.A." There's a sticker on the front of each with writing in Japanese. I don't know if these were pressed in the U.S. for the Japanese market, or what. The pressings are far superior to what U.S. BN was doing at the time. I also recall seeing 12" BN LPs around that time that my local record shop owner told me were pressed in the U.S. for the Japanese market. I'm sure that Chuck or someone else who was involved in the record biz at that time will know more.
Chuck Nessa
In the mid '70s UA pressed a bunch of '10 and '12 inch lps for shipment to Japan. The "leftovers" were sold as cutouts in the US. I had 'em all at one point. All I have left are the pressings of 5036 - Urbie Green, 5059/5060 - Best From the West and 5066 - Hank Mobley Quartet. Peter A
Anyone has any info on these early Japanese pressings? I had no idea Japan produced Blue NOte Lps as early as 1967... According to this site Toshiba Musical Industries started releasing Blue Note LP's in Japan in 1966. However, between 1966-1968 these 'Japanese' editions seem to have been imported American pressings supplied with obi's. In 1968 Toshiba started pressing vinyl editions in Japan, initially only 45's but later (1970?) also LP's. Regards, Peter
Big Beat Steve
When exactly did Japan start to press facsimile reissues of U.S. Jazz LP's for domestic consumption at all? I don't want to sidetrack or hijack this thread, but I have Japanese pressings of the "Presenting Carl Perkins" LP on Dootone and Rusty Bryant's "America's Greatest Jazz" (the R&B date) on Dot that look very, very old - definitely older than the late 60s. Rooster_Ties
Some history, for when the eBay auction goes bye-bye... Art Blakey Blue Note Japan LP A Night at BL audiophile Seller: maxharm Here's a beautiful copy of "A Night at Bird Land, Volume 1" by the Art Blakey Quintet. This appears to be an early, if not the original, Japan pressing by Toshiba-EMI (LNJ-70991). The label says "Microgroove" and "Blue Note Records - A Division of Liberty Records" - see picture. Very hard to find. Blakey is joined by Clifford Brown, Lou Donaldson, Horace Silver, and Curly Russell. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder. Condition: Jacket - NM-, front and back looks great but some small splits are forming at top and bottom of jacket; Record NM-, sounds wonderful, would grade even higher, but some light bag marks are visible on the vinyl, though the bag marks are not audible on my system. Also some very light spindle marks on one side of label. Please check out my other LP auctions! clifford_thornton
I have a couple of very early Japanese Fontanas that look to be from the late '60s. They aren't pressed that well, which I hear is often the case for early Japanese pressings.
