Durium
I was at a Stan Kenton concert of his orchestra years ago and impressed by the sound of this band. Since that day I'm searching for recordings that give me the same thrill as thirty years ago. Up to now I didn't find it, except one recording the band made with Laurindo Almeida. Teasing the Korean
How about either Cuban Fire or West Side Story, both arranged by Johnny Richards? I would also recommend his earlier recordings with arrangements by Pete Rugolo.
brownie
Stan Kenton 'Live at the Las Vegas Tropicana' should not disappoint either!
Big Beat Steve
Hans, are you on the lookout for LIVE recordings to capture the concert atmosphere or just for any Kenton record recommendations? Not all bands that Kenton had throughout the decades always had the same kind of "Kenton Sound".
John Tapscott
Two good live Kenton CD's from the '70's are Live at Redlands University & Birthday in Britain

Eloe Omoe
In fact I'm searching for some good sounding recordings. Not specific live-recordings. In that case, the recently reissued "Stan Kenton Today" should do. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stan-Kenton-Today-...n/dp/B0006840IE It's a double CD, recorded in London, 1970, and originally issued by Decca (in its old "Phase 4 Stereo Spectacular Series). Now it's on Vocalion. A very good concert, imho, and it is LOUD luca

DukeCity
You may already have this info, but: In the 1970's Kenton started releasing albums on his own label, Creative World Records. Those have been reissued recently on CD and I found many of them here. Many of these albums are "Live at Whatever University", so you hear the band in action. Durium
You may already have this info, but: In the 1970's Kenton started releasing albums on his own label, Creative World Records. Thanks Glen. As I wrote in my web log, I remember that the Creative World LPs, were to expensive for me at that time. Everytime I see such an LP now a days I don't know if it is worth the money to buy it, although I can afford it now and they aren't even that expensive.
