sheldonm Posted November 17, 2006 Report Posted November 17, 2006 I received a note from the people at Newport Jazz saying Ruth Brown has passed away ......and then a note a few minutes ago that she is still alive but on life support....which will be removed within the hour.... Mark~ Quote
brownie Posted November 17, 2006 Report Posted November 17, 2006 Sad to hear that! Superb singer! Quote
sal Posted November 17, 2006 Report Posted November 17, 2006 Thank you for the news, Mark. Very sad. Saw her perform several times over the years in Chicago. A fantastic singer. Quote
sidewinder Posted November 17, 2006 Report Posted November 17, 2006 (edited) That's sad news indeed. She was just on UK TV the other day on a 'history of soul' documentary looking very much alive and full of spirit. Must have been recorded over a year ago though. I'll dig out that LP she did with Thad & Mel this weekend, in respect. Edited November 17, 2006 by sidewinder Quote

She made you really feel what she was saying about the conditions under which the old R&B singers worked. Wonderful singer! Great sense of humour - "If I can't sell it, I'll keep sittin' on it". I'll listen to "Blues on Broadway" tomorrow. MG Quote

J.A.W. Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 (edited) She died on Friday (November 17, 2006). NY Times obituary Edited November 18, 2006 by J.A.W. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 According to most bio info on Willis Jackson, Ruth and he actually married; they didn't just have a romance. MG Quote
jostber Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 Ruth Brown recorded a fantastic song in the 50's called "I still love you". Rings in my mind right now. Sequel CD: http://cd.ciao.co.uk/Best_Of_The_Rest_Of_R..._Brown__5922881 Quote
JSngry Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 R.I.P. Ms. Brown. You kept it real. Much love and the fullest of props. Quote
brownie Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 Her hit song 'Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean' was the deciding factor in the start of my love affair with r&b - along with the Ray Charles songs - back in the fifties! Ruth Brown's voice remains very vibrant here! Quote
mikeweil Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 Germany's Elvis clone Peter Krauss covered "Lucky Lips" but never achieved the original's swing. Ruth Brown's version never fails to move people to the dancefloor when I put it on. Thanks for the great groove, Miss Rhythm, and R.I.P. Quote
mailman Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 Another one of the greats has left us. I had the pleasure of hearing her sing in a small club in the early 1970s backed by a small organ based group. I can't recall who the musicians were. It was around the time that her lp on Cobbelstone came out. It was a great evening. The Times obit has a few small errors but is essentially on the money and properly respectful of a great artist. Thanks for the music RB. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 The organist was probably Bobby Forrester, who passed away in 2002. RIP Ruth Brown. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 Playing earlier "Blues on Broadway". A great album from a great singer and person. Sometimes, even very great albums like this get Grammies. MG Quote
