mikeweil Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 MG 12190 Marc Levin - The Dragon Suite José Gwanga (tb) Marc Levin (fl, brass) Calo Scott (cello) Cecil McBee (b) Frank Clayton (d) NYC, 1967 Morning Colors The Dragon and the Rainbow Form with the Modern Men The Rainbow Twilight Dance Meditation The Sea, The Fire, The Earth There's a small error: It's Jonas Gwanga, not José - he was from South Africa and a friend of Hugh Masekela et al. That Levin LP is a minor gem, IMO, and helped me a lot to appreciate free improvisation, as Levin was a lot more sensitive than most free from players and did not overpower that much. Calo Scott is great here. Drummer Frank Clayton later married singer Jay. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 Actually Laton, these were also available in 16 bit jewelcase editions . . . at least these, maybe more of the listed ones. • Paul Bley: Footloose! • Bill Barron: The Tenor Stylings of Bill Barron • Valdo Williams: New Advanced Jazz • Charles Moffett: The Gift Quote
Late Posted May 27, 2008 Author Report Posted May 27, 2008 Actually Laton, these were also available in 16 bit jewelcase editions . . . at least these, maybe more of the listed ones. • Paul Bley: Footloose! • Bill Barron: The Tenor Stylings of Bill Barron • Valdo Williams: New Advanced Jazz • Charles Moffett: The Gift You're right. Only saw the Moffett in the jewel case edition. I remember when Dusty Groove offered the Japanese mini-LP versions way back. They didn't sell the Hill, Williams, and Carn for a long time, and ended up discounting them to $13. I bought the Williams, and (I think) ended up selling it here! Quote
Late Posted May 27, 2008 Author Report Posted May 27, 2008 Thanks for the correction, Mike. Reading over the discographical information above, there are quite a few typos. I don't even remember where I got that information. I'm guess jazzdisco.org. Quote
Chas Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 Here are two of the late-Sixties Savoy LPs that a lot of people have never seen : Marzette Watts' 1969 date : Robert Pozar's 1966 date : I haven't heard either of these , but would buy the Pozar for the cover alone ! Quote
JohnS Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 I still have my original copy of the Shepp/Dixon Quartet. What an ear opener at the time. And still one of my favourite records. Sold my Dixon/NYC5 album when it was llast reisssued on cd. Have a few of the others as reissues. All nice stuff, Savoy was a great label with iot's own special feel. Quote

mikeweil Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 Robert Pozar's 1966 date : I haven't heard either of these , but would buy the Pozar for the cover alone ! I once found a copy of the Pozar LP in a sales bin - bought it for Garrison but it didn't thrill me that much. Not as spectacular as it looks like. Pozar was not that original as a drummer, the date didn't jell, IMO. If I still had it I would give it to you ... Quote
king ubu Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 The Pozar was out in the blogosphere once, a couple of years ago. I thought there was a thread about it but a search for Pozar doesn't bring up much at all... I agree that it's not spectacular, but it's not quite that bad, Mike! Quote
AndrewHill Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 Anyone have or know the band/track details on the Watts? That album cover looks pretty cool, especially for 1969! Quote

Late Posted January 17, 2009 Author Report Posted January 17, 2009 Free the never-reissued Savoys ! Here's a new article on Ed Curran. He's still living and apparently has returned to music. Quote
Late Posted March 28, 2011 Author Report Posted March 28, 2011 Up for air. Finally found the Vincent Hill record. Waaay better than I'd expected. Kind of like ... if Dave Brubeck (with a softer touch) had avant leanings? Something like that. I need to keep listening to it. I'm also a fan of the Perry Robinson title. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 Funk Dumpling was at least on cd from Denon/Savoy. Great session. Quote

Late Posted March 28, 2011 Author Report Posted March 28, 2011 Funk Dumpling was at least on cd from Denon/Savoy. Great session. You're right. I have the Denon reissue (purple spine, yellow print), which unfortunately used an altered version of the original cover art. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 Yeah, an altered cover is okay with me. Quote
Late Posted March 28, 2011 Author Report Posted March 28, 2011 (edited) Has anyone here heard the Jack Brokensha record? And Then I Said ...? That Savoy has eluded me. Edited March 28, 2011 by Late Quote
