doubleM Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 Hey Everybody...nice to be over here at the new forum w/ y'all. I wanted to post a link to a sample of jazz drawings that I've done over the last while. The link is: grapnel.net/moor . I'll be showing these and many more (Trane, Lester Young, Joe Henderson, to name some) at the Bluemonk in Portland in April and May. If you're in the area, come on by! Quote
Noj Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 Nice work. For those who don't know, pencil portaits of this nature are extremely labor intensive, and and looking at doubleM's work I will say he has some excellent control with this particular medium. Beautiful contrast, which is the real difficulty with this technique! Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 LINK: http://www.grapnel.net/moor/ Nice work, doubleM. If I might ask - would you be willing to post the Joe Henderson picture you did?? I'm a big Henderson fan, and would love to see it. Keep up the great work!!! Quote
doubleM Posted March 19, 2003 Author Report Posted March 19, 2003 Thanks, guys. Rooster Ties---I haven't scanned the Joe yet. I hope to have an updated site soon, with the rest, incl. JOE. A preview--It's like "the Kicker" cover, w/o the swirly background. Quote
White Lightning Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 nice work! I can't wait to see some more! Quote
catesta Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 doubleM, real nice. I've been taking some drawing classes myself. I'm not quite up to your level, but my instructor says I have the potential. I did this one last night. Not as if anyone could not tell, but it's Lester Young on his way to pick his sax up. Quote
Joe G Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Incredible! I think you've developed a much higher level of patience and concentration than I have in my work... Quote
Joe G Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Thanks! Hey! How'd you sneek that in there ahead of my post!??!? Quote
AfricaBrass Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Nice work, DoubleM! Catesta, I like Lester's pork pie hat. Quote
Sica Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Hey, nice work indeed! I'm also a mainly "pencil" artist. So, I know what you're going through to draw those. But isnt it just worth it? Pencil is so rarely used anymore, but so awesome. I will never fall out of love with it. I dont draw Jazz musicians, but I have been known to draw artists of various sorts... Quote
AfricaBrass Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Those Savoy covers are horrible! They look like they were done by a little kid. Reminds of a website with kids art. Here's the link: Crappy Kid's Art Quote
doubleM Posted March 20, 2003 Author Report Posted March 20, 2003 Thanks to everyone for looking, and all. I'll post more, later. In my recent ones they are all playing either a trumpet or a sax. I agree that it does require some patience to draw the musculature in the hand and embouchure. Catesta, I think you're right near ready!( I thought it was Django). J/K. Oh, and they always wore those friggin' suits..!....I think I spent at least 2 hours getting pinstripes drawn well on a Pres suit. If anyone has any ideas for additions to these, post them or send them! I'm thinking Monk, Bill Evans, Woody Shaw, Bird. Side note--I started my first one (Lee) on 9/11 while watching war footage. Quote
doubleM Posted March 20, 2003 Author Report Posted March 20, 2003 OOPs, I meant "Terrorism" footage. That's what I was watching. I didn't even know of the BNBB at that point. Quote
Joe G Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 If anyone has any ideas for additions to these, post them or send them! I'm thinking Monk, Bill Evans, Woody Shaw, Bird. I'm thinking....organissimo! Quote
Simon Weil Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 I loved the intensity of the Dizzy one...Also it works against his public image. Simon Weil Quote
Simon Weil Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 ...And I thought it was Fats and.... "just to be sure".... did that thing with the properties button...diz.jpg. Shoulda believed my instincts. Simon Weil Quote
alankin Posted March 22, 2003 Report Posted March 22, 2003 (edited) Some nice drawings. By the way, my current avatar is from one of my paintings: Can you spot the jazz musician in the painting? Edited March 22, 2003 by alankin Quote
doubleM Posted March 22, 2003 Author Report Posted March 22, 2003 Thanks, alankin. Nice painting, too. However,, after ruling out John Tesh, and Kenny G , I can't tell who it is. Couldn't be Elvin Jones... I dunno. Quote
JSngry Posted March 22, 2003 Report Posted March 22, 2003 Is that a tenor player (Yusef? Mohawk-era Sonny?) I see up in the tree in the upper RH corner? Quote
alankin Posted March 22, 2003 Report Posted March 22, 2003 There is a tenor sax player there. He's inside practicing. The figure in the driveway is his wife. She's going out for another six-pack. Quote
JSngry Posted March 22, 2003 Report Posted March 22, 2003 And I may say to myself, "THIS IS NOT MY HOUSE! THIS IS NOT MY WIFE! But this IS my six-pack." Seriously man, I saw a head and a tenor in the tree, angling up and out. Guess I'm hallucinating, huh? MABEL! Quote
