Attention Stout Drinkers!

Up in NYC last month, I was sitting at the bar in an Irish pub and noticed that there wasn't any Guinness listed (draught or bottle) ....so I asked about it. The bartender said that alot of the pub owners are still yanked off at Guinness and that a boatload of brewery employees who'd been uncerimoniously given the axe by Guinness and were quickly scooped up by Anheuser-Busch, are now brewing -- here in St. Louis -- the Bare Knuckle Stout that's listed on this page.. He poured us a few sample glasses of draught.....and it's damn good stuff! This might be old news but I sure missed it.........hadn't heard a peep about this new AB product....or the story behind it. Anyone else in the U.S. notice Bare Knuckle being sold in their local Irish joint?

DUBLIN, Ireland Oct. 26, 2006— Guinness, the dark Irish drink known as the "black stuff", could soon be turning red.

Manufacturer Diageo plans to produce a version at its Irish brewery using lightly roasted barley, which will have a reddish colour, and give it a trial run across the Irish Sea in Britain.

"If you held up a pint of Guinness to the light, the red would come through. It's a very deep red," a Diageo spokeswoman said.

Diageo plans to test Guinness Red on drinkers in British pubs in the coming months but has no plans to launch it more widely, either at home in Ireland or in about 150 other countries where Guinness is sold.

The beer, which like the traditional, darker Guinness will have a creamy white head and be poured in the two steps needed to let it settle, will have a strength of about 4.1 percent.

Diageo already sells several versions of the brew — including Guinness Original, Guinness Draught and Guinness Foreign Extra Stout — to cater to different tastes around the world and has tested other limited-edition varieties in Ireland in the past year.

Somewhat unrelated, but I was in Ireland last month for a little over a week. All I can say is that I will never drink Guinness here in the states again. Used to love it, but now it tastes flat and sterile. Guinness in Ireland is like a glass of heaven.

Some beers just shouldn't be exported.

Anyways, carry on! I'm interested in trying this "Bare Knuckle Stout".

Heineken is another beer that doesn't travel well. In the States it is skunky and I don't care for it at all. In Amsterdam, it's delicious!

Amstel Beer is decent too......but you can't get it here. Just that 'Light' stuff. Wonder why? Jon, looks as though we'll be over there in a couple of months....where's a decent place to stay these days in the city ctr? It's been 20 yrs anyway.

Not sure Rolf. I've only been there once, for a week. My friends and I stayed here, which was pretty nice and on the affordable side. It was next door to the Royal Palace.

I stayed in a youth hostel directly in the center of the red light district one time, probably about 20 years ago as well. I doubt it still exists, but it was an eye opening experience, figuratively and literally. :D

I'm guessing that wouldn't suit your interests today :P

very hard to find

definitely not a sam adams fan, but their cream stout is definitely worth a sampling.
