slide_advantage_redoux Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 (edited) I am always on the lookout for the Italian Horo releases. They pop up every so often on Ebay, but the prices usually are way out of my budget. I emailed someone who was connected to the label in Rome awhile back, and he had practically the entire catalogue in stock, but his prices were absurdly high. Currently I have the Rosolino release as well as the Roswell Rudd one. I would love to track down more of them. Any readers here have many in their collections? michel1969 Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 I would recommend to avoid buying thoses Horo on Ebay. You'll probably find most of them, but Ebay has the same price gouging effect. Its easy to find most titles on record shops for decent prices. If you are in the US, try to contact some serious european internet sites shops. Or Musicstack, Gemm.... Quote
NIS Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 (edited) Hi Slide, I have a Horo release by Karl Berger. I haven't listened to it in years. If you are interested in KB send me a PM. Nick Edited November 2, 2006 by NIS Quote
Hot Ptah Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 I have the three Sun Ra releases, which are all excellent. I think that the big band album is the best album that Sun Ra ever released. I also have albums by Max Roach, Sam Rivers and Lester Bowie, all of which range from very good to excellent. Quote
kh1958 Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 I have all the Horo George Adams, Don Pullen, and Dannie Richmond releases--and all are good. Quote
Late Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 Someday ... these will be reissued on compact disc? Through the kindness of a board member here, I have two of the Sun Ra's. Excellent music. Whoever owns the rights to the Horo label really would do well to start a CD reissue program. I think, run in limited editions, they would more than break even. Use hathut as a model, and you're off to a good start! Quote

B. Clugston Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 I only have one Horo and it's excellent: Sam Rivers Black Africa! Perugia, a trio recording with Rivers on tenor, soprano, flute and piano (and voice), plus Joe Daley on tuba and baritone horn and Sydney Smart on drums. I've read elsewhere on these forums that Horo's owner is, at best, eccentric, and may not even be the actual owner of some of the recordings. So CD reissues are unlikely until the Andorrans swoop in. Shannon Dickey Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 B. Clugston: I think yr correct on yr assement on the HORO issue. I have several HORO releases, including the RA's. I have the Rivers dbl lp set, and it IS awesome! Got a Konitz and a couple of others. Yea, they need a CD issue! ---HB Quote
brownie Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 The Ran Blake twofer 'Open City' is a minor gem! Wish I could lay hands on Blake's other Horo release 'Crystal Trip'! Never saw or heard that one... Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted November 4, 2006 Report Posted November 4, 2006 (edited) The only Horo I have is one of the Ra's, "Other Voices, Other Blues". Fantastic!! - and I'd buy one on CD in a heartbeat. Edited November 4, 2006 by Rooster_Ties Quote

Any readers here have many in their collections? Most of them BTW, Horo's owner also issued a live Freddie Hubbard 5-LP set, on a label called "Black Shell". That's a real collector's item, and the music is quite good (it's from the quintet with Dave Schnitter and Larry Klein). luca Quote
porcy62 Posted November 23, 2006 Report Posted November 23, 2006 (edited) Some years ago, the producer sold the records still in stock on internet. That was prior to eBay crazyness. On the contrary of BN I found these vinyls fairly often in italian used record shops and at decent price. Edited April 20, 2008 by porcy62 Quote
Chalupa Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 The Ran Blake twofer 'Open City' is a minor gem! Wish I could lay hands on Blake's other Horo release 'Crystal Trip'! Never saw or heard that one... I just received in the mail this morning both of Ran Blake's albums he recorded for Horo - STILL SEALED - for $33. The seller still has 3 sealed copies of Crystal Trip in stock. Quote

Man, collector's life is for tough guys. Quote

Hot Ptah Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 Among the few Horos currently listed on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/JOHNNY-GRIFFIN-Horo-10...1QQcmdZViewItem I just alphabetized a stack of about 200 albums which I had purchased for $1 each when a used music store went out of business, and this Johnny Griffin album was among them!
