Jazz Kat Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 I love this album! I just bought the RVG two weeks ago. Most reviewers hated it on bluenote.com. What are your thoughts? I actually like the pop tunes, but the bop numbers are also excellent. Kind of depressing though, knowing what a low point Mobley was going to be shortly after and during the time of this release. He still plays very good. George Benson plays great. Quote
Kyo Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 It's the only Mobley album I don't have yet. Guess I'll give it a try next year. Quote
Dan Gould Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 "Reach Out" and particularly "Going Out of My Head" were misfires, imo, but I've always enjoyed the rest of the album. So while I don't dismiss it completely as some do, at the same time, its probably the closest I know to "non-essential" Hank. And Hank is very essential to me! Quote
J Larsen Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 I haven't listened to it in a long time, but I didn't care for it. It sounded very commercial to me. I may give it another chance some day. My initial impressions are not always fair. Quote
jazzbo Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 I've always liked this one. George does play well! Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 I like it too. I'm esp'ly fond of the way Hank phrases the bridge to "Going Out of My Head". Peoples that hear the two pop/R&B hits on here as 'straight'/'commercial' just aren't listening v. carefully, IMHO. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 yea- reach out is not your typical blue note boogaloo- Hanks rendition give has much more depth and soul- this was not a low point for hank- this was a high point- he was playing in europe a lot and getting a lot of reckgnotion (sic) Quote
J Larsen Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 Listened again - with irreproachable care - and still didn't like it. I wouldn't go quite so far as to say I hate it, or even to say that it's awful or really bad, but I'd certainly reach for any other Hank title in my collection before this one. It will be a while before this one gets another spin in my system. To each their own... Quote

JSngry Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 Good tunes, good sidemen, but Hank himself has played better elsewhere. "Not bad but not my favorite" sums it up for me. Quote
Bill Nelson Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 'Reach Out' could hardly be considered 'essential' Mobley. It's gotta be his most lightweight BN -- "reach out", indeed. (I unloaded mine at a recent Atlanta record show.) Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 Bought it when issued and always thought of it as a good 10" lp. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 Enjoyed it when I had it, but my copy wasn't in that great condition and since has left the building... I too remember Benson sounding quite nice on it. Quote

robertoart Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 Love it, love it, love it. One of my favourite Benson on Blue Note dates too. The other being Taru from Lee Morgan. BTW, has there ever been a thread on discussing opnions on Benson's rare appearances on the label? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 There should be - I like his work from this period, for sure! Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 no but there should be: what other BN dates is he on besides Reach out and Taru? Quote
Guest the mommy Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 benson was on a larry young album, "contrasts". and i guess the lou donaldson was just a few years earlier.... Quote
Brad Posted November 3, 2006 Report Posted November 3, 2006 Had it, sold it. Not one of my favorites. Quote

Yesterday I completed my collection of Mobley-led albums. Woohoo! I've been listening to Reach Out for a couple of hours now and I like it! I'd certainly call it underrated based on my enjoyment of the album so far. Edited February 24, 2007 by Kyo Quote

I'm with the folks who class this album as minor Mobley; however, it's certainly not irredeemable. "Minor" doesn't mean "bad." Come to think of it, I find I like this album more than the Thinking Of Home LP---there's something about the sound of the latter that I find a bit off-putting, and I think Mobley's playing isn't as good.
