If you've ever wondered what a lightly funky jazz album on ECM would sound like, you should check this one out. (With Garbarek and Stanko on the front line, of all people.) I'm not so impressed the first time through. Maybe it will reveal more substance after a few more listenings.

i've had this for about a year now (the shops in france were really behind it) and felt the very same way you did initially. however, i found with repeated listenings it grows quite nicely, so stick with it. garbarek dominates the sides he's on, that's for sure. manu is a nice addition to the ecm fold, imho...

I think it's a nice, swinging  record. Not a masterpiece but, hey, those are uncommon anyway.

Wow, I like this one a lot! It's great to hear Garbarek doing som blowing on tenor, and it's not that bad an idea to get the two better thirds of the Simple Acoustic Trio on boat, either... pretty nice one, I think!

from the label:

October 30 , 2006

“Neighbourhood”, Manu Katché’s ECM leader debut, has won the German Critics Prize – Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik – as Jazz Album of the Year 2006.

From the jury’s findings:

“The French drummer Manu Katché, who has played on hundreds of records with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, Sting and Dire Straits has not been in a hurry to follow up ‘It’s About Time’, the first CD issued under his name. 15 years have passed between that disc and ‘Neighbourhood’. His recording on ECM assembles a cast as unexpected as it is convincing: the Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko, and members of Stanko’s quartet Marcin Wasilewski, piano, and Slawomir Kurkiewicz, bass, meet Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek, playing in peak form. The chemistry of the team is a perfect blend, both amongst the rhythm section and between the horn players. At once delicate and relaxed, Katché’s compositional sketches unfold gracefully. His lucid drumming never forces itself into the foreground of this fascinating and well-made French-Polish-Norwegian production that emphasizes the musical qualities of European neighborliness.”

The award will be presented to Manu Katché on Saturday, 18. November 2006, at the Berlin Musikinstrumenten-Museum.

Gave this one a chance when it came out, and it didn't do anything for me. It hit the "sell" pile after a few spins. I wanted to like it, but it wasn't meant to be.
