kulu se mama
i am having some work done around my house, and my contractor found an old book in the attic. i had no idea it was even there. my house is not that old (built in 1979), but it was built by a german builder for a german family. the book is from 1886 and it's titled "die gartenlande." it's over 900 pages and has many illustrations, but it is not a children's book. it appears to be a history/fable book. does anyone know what it might be? Claude
Could it be "Die Gartenlaube", which means a small hut in the garden? The german Wikipedia has some info: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Gartenlaube And some pictures: http://www.oldmapsbooks.com/Book_Pages/B13xx/B1394garte.htm http://www.oldmapsbooks.com/Book_Pages/B11xx/B1193gart.htm It was one of the first german family entertainment magazines, and existed from 1853-1903. Maybe your 900 page volume is a yearbook. Edited October 22, 2006 by Claude

couw
probably it's a bound volume of "Die Gartenlaube" (the garden pavillion), a family magazine, published since 1853 in Leipzig. There happens to be an 1886 volume on German Ebay at the moment so you can compare: click
tjobbe
that is it. thanks for the help. unfortunately the wikpedia information is also in german. i will keep searching. thanks again. actually - if i search through google, i can have the wikpedia page translated. check this book at amanzon here: http://www.amazon.com/Popularizing-Nation-...e/dp/0803212836 which deals with the German post WW-1 Kitsch period. Not sure if that helps as well as that is what you intend to look for. Cheers, Tjobbe
kulu se mama
the ebay auction is exactly what it is. the binding of the book is in poor condition and written in old german script, so i mistakenly thought it said gartenlande, but it is gartenlaube. unfortunately it does not appear that it will pay for the work that i'm having done. drats.
