Big Al Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Quote
JSngry Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 I heard he was murdered, cut up into pieces, and his remains strewn about a factory that made canned fruit. Quote
chitownjazz Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 My recollection, for which I can not easily find any substantiation on the web, is that he had a brain tumor or even brain cancer. Sound familiar to anyone else? Quote
John Tapscott Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 From what I recall (vaguely) Chas' version is right. A great player, for sure, who left us too soon. Kind of ironic that his last (or one of his last recordings) was with Art Pepper. Quote
Larry Kart Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 I recall hearing that it was AIDS or AIDS related, via the dirty needle route. Quote
bertrand Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 And I had heard Leukemia. A.B. Spellman needs to write a new book: 'Four Deaths in the Be-Bop business'. He could cover some of the more colorful demises (Lee Morgan, Sonny Clark). Bertrand. Quote
Late Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 I'm pretty sure it was postage stamps. Quote

Tom Storer Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 You guys believe that old rumor that Joe Farrell died? I just saw him in a supermarket the day before yesterday. He and Elvis were reading the Enquirer in the checkout line. Quote

Larry Kart Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 As I recall, a grim tale lies behind this sentence: "Larry Young died from untreated pneumonia at the age of 38." Quote
7/4 Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 As I recall, a grim tale lies behind this sentence: "Larry Young died from untreated pneumonia at the age of 38." I wouldn't mind knowing more about his story. I met someone who grew up in Newark, when it came to Jazz, he only wanted to talk about how he grew up across the street from Hank Mobley. When I asked him about Larry Young, all he would say was he knew his Dad. Quote
bertrand Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 (edited) There is much more to this story, but I only have sketchy details right now. From www.larryyoungmusic.com: 'After Larry returned from California, he suddenly passed away under mysterious circumstances which are being investigated presently by the authorities. Like Jimi Hendrix, Janice Joplin and other artist of that period who passed away under mysterious circumstances appears that now you can add Larry Young to that category. Larry Young died a needless death at the age of 37. Larry Young was a wise, kind and loving man whose imposing stature was betrayed by his deep gentleness and respect to people who was close to him. He was very versatile, inventive and a pioneering musician who left the planet with a lot of unfinished musical business. We miss the man and the music he made very much. ' Bertrand.
