GA Russell Posted October 14, 2006 Report Posted October 14, 2006 My favorites are his first three on Prestige - Soul Message Living Soul (available on the CD Spicy) Misty Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 14, 2006 Report Posted October 14, 2006 No arguments with the above albums, but also Groove Holmes - The groover (half of Legends of Acid Jazz) Groove Holmes - Get up and get it (half of Blue Groove) Those two are available Groove Holmes & Gene Ammons - Groovin' with Jug Groove Holmes & Les McCann - Somethin' special These two were on CD but may be deleted (though not hard to find) Groove Holmes - Shippin' out Groove Holmes - Broadway Groove Holmes - Blues all day long These albums on Muse are really great - if you come across them, get 'em! There was a CD compilation of some of the stuff on 32Jazz. MG Quote

alocispepraluger102 Posted October 14, 2006 Author Report Posted October 14, 2006 Much to like about this one: ben and les? Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 14, 2006 Report Posted October 14, 2006 Much to like about this one: ben and les? Yes indeed, but in my view, not quite up to the standard of the other two PJs I mentioned. MG Quote
JSngry Posted October 14, 2006 Report Posted October 14, 2006 But Ben's "Deep Purple" justifies its existence. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 14, 2006 Report Posted October 14, 2006 But Ben's "Deep Purple" justifies its existence. Absolutely - and George Freeman's quirky solo on "Seven come eleven" (what does that mean in American?). But Groove isn't quite the star of this album, in my view. MG Quote

Soulstation1 Posted October 15, 2006 Report Posted October 15, 2006 the new rvg of soul message is nice Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted October 15, 2006 Report Posted October 15, 2006 used to love groove holmes in the bars 40 years ago, but not familiar with his recordings. recommendations....... Groove Holmes was remarkably consistent in the quality of his recordings, imo. I would just get what you can find. I've probably got 15+ cds, and I like them all. Quote
Free For All Posted October 15, 2006 Report Posted October 15, 2006 the new rvg of soul message is nice Check out the current AMG samples of this one. Definitely not the right recording! Quote
king ubu Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 recently picked this one up, Onzy Mathews big band arrangements (unspecified personnel, the notes give a couple of names, though): Pretty good. Got it the same day as I got Jimmy McGriff's "Tribute to Basie", another very good organ w/big band disc. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted November 2, 2006 Report Posted November 2, 2006 There's a sort of disconnect between the subtitle of that record and the picture, don't you think? Quote

Got it the same day as I got Jimmy McGriff's "Tribute to Basie", another very good organ w/big band disc. It's a decent album. Some of the tracks are duplicated on this one: "A bowl of soul" on Loma. Or, if you want a REAL disconnect between title and sleeve, the British issue: MG Quote

I have several on oddball labels such as "Beast Retro" that are great little records. Quote
shaft Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 I like the "Broadway" Album on 32Jazz. A really funky Moon River(!) on that CD. Get it while you can! /Shaft Quote

Get it while you can! /Shaft Yeah, this and the original Groove Holmes solo LP "After Hours" are my favorites. With the Prestige titles Soul Message and the LP with "Just Friends" not far behind. GA Russell Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 (edited) ...and the LP with "Just Friends" not far behind. That would be The Groover on Prestige. I just listened to it last night. I enjoy it, but personally I don't think it has the unique spark that Soul Message has. edit for typo Edited November 14, 2006 by GA Russell Quote

Laura, On a Clear Day, See See Rider, Just Friends, Speak Low, That Healin' Feelin', I'll Remember April..... I really have dug that CD a ton over the years. The cover even has a great shot of Groove, even though the artwork is a little psychedelic as is all in the series. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 My dad likes to tell me the story about seeing Groove in Lansing at the old Tropicana in the 70s. He was there for a week (or maybe two week) stint and my dad went to see him every night. He said his B3 was so beat-up it looked like beavers had gnawed on it, but it and Groove sounded great! Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 The Groove Holmes on Muse that I really like best is "Shippin' out", with Dave Schnitter on tenor. The feeling to that LP is wonderful. MG Quote
