jazzbo Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 It's so cool how everyone loves different stuff. The Farlow would not be in my love category, nor would the O'Day. The Shank and the Elvin would be, as well as the Hodges (on TOP, either one!) and the Mobley. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 Glad to see this thread; Roy Eldridge is someone I have hardly anything of. And sound matters to me much more than notes. SO, do I go for this before the Farmer/Golson? (Decisions, decisions...) MG Quote
jazzbo Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 Yes. Especially since you already have part of the Farmer/Golson material I'd bet. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 Yes. Especially since you already have part of the Farmer/Golson material I'd bet. Not much - 1 compilation. But that's something. And I do have a fair bit of other Farmer, Golson and Jazztet stuff. Well, Roy next purchase, then. Thanks folks. MG Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Roy is a "major artist" in my book. If you don't dig him that is ok too. Whatever. Quote
montg Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 One of the first jazz CDs I ever purchased was a Basie Verve compilation--it had the Newport One O'Clock Jump cut where Eldridge goes way over the top... I loved it, such excitement, and I've been an Eldridge fan ever since. This is a nice set, Eldridge is never less than exciting. I'm not as enthused about the jam sessions as others appear to be, but overall I'd recommend this set--given Verve's current sad state, it seems unlikely this stuff will be available once the Mosaic goes out of print. I wish Mosaic would release the Eldridge material on Keynote that Verve owns. Quote
