danasgoodstuff Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 I really like Rhino's Roots of Funk, Vol.1/2, a sort of prequel to their History of Funk series, once the genre gets firmly established it all gets too reified for me (more or less true for all genres, but more so for funk IMHO). Given that I'm not sure how much I would like this box... Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 Not sure if it's OOP, the library where I work has it and I have some of the material elsewhere... Quote
zen archer Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 I have the Roots of Funk 1/2 and yes it's OOP just like the rest of the volumes which are the History. There is some rare stuff on Root's , BUT has a healthy dose of the usual suspects . Cissy Strut, Spreadin honey, Funky broadway pt.1 , Tramp...... dan , i would get the box set just for the 2 Sly cut's alone..ton's of rare stuff i have never heard on What It Is !!! Quote

neveronfriday Posted February 19, 2007 Report Posted February 19, 2007 (edited) There are two audio stream of the What It Is box set (the streams are a bit over one hour and are apparently produced from a 17-track sampler from the box set). Quality is better than any of those amazon etc. clips. Real: Real stream Media Player: Media stream Great stuff ... Edited February 19, 2007 by neveronfriday Quote

Noj Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 I have one called "Dave Hamilton's Detroit Dancers" and which has some gems on it. Older 45s than most of my other compilations. Seeing Dave Hamilton's name, I'd take a chance on that one, SS1. Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 Just to let you know that Amazon.co.uk are offering this boxset for just under £23 delivered from one of their resellers. That's less than £6 a CD! What it is: Funky Soul & Rare Grooves Boxset Ordered it on Monday - arrived on Wednesday. Lovely packaging and terrific music - who could ask for more? At that price - even though I'm not greatly enamoured of various artist compilations - I've pulled the trigger - through the O link, not yours HM. But thanks a lot for the info! MG Quote
