Tom 1960 Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 I'm presently listening to the excellent series of recordings he did with Shelly Manne at the Blackhawk from 1959. His playing is really top notch on these recordings. Anyone else here an admirer of Joe's playing and willing to offer up further recordings worthy of exploring? Thanks. Quote

Big Beat Steve Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 (edited) Joe Gordon didn't have all that many dates as a leader. Any opinions on his first LP, "Introducing Mr Gordon" on EmArcy (1954/55)? I picked up a reissue of the 12" release some years back and was quite impressed (others too, it seems ... the original release got a 4 star rating in Down Beat). jazzydaddy Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 A very nice album in my opinion. It was reissued on CD here in the states 6 or 7 years back on this Verve lElite imited edition CD coupled with an Art Blakey session that featured Gordon. A super twofer! A search of Amazon.com shows it available from several sources at around $15 US. Anyone who doesn't have these sessions would be well advised to snap it up while they can........... Tom 1960 Posted October 12, 2006 Author Report Posted October 12, 2006 Thanks for the assistance, Bright Moments. I figured there must be a thread around here already devoted to the man. Got to add his recordings to the "must have list". Quote

jtaylor Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 Love Joe Gordon's work despite their not being much of it available. Another album featuring him on a few numbers is Benny Carter's big band date of 1958, "Aspects." Orginially done on United Artists it was reissued a few years ago on a Blue Note disc. Also features excellent solos from Frank Rosolino, Carter, and typically excellent drumming by Shelly Manne. Quote
Niko Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 another fine album with joe gordon on it is harold land's west coast blues (line up is: Joe Gordon, Harold Land, Wes Montgomery, Barry Harris, Sam Jones, Louis Hayes ) (and he's also on jimmy woods awakening which i do not know...) and another for those art blakey tracks with gordon and gigi gryce! mailman Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 His Contemporary date is available as a download from emusic.com. I got it that way and like it a lot. Land's West Coast Blues is in my stash there. Quote
