catesta Posted August 15, 2003 Report Posted August 15, 2003 Can anyone give me some information on this date? Quote
Dmitry Posted August 15, 2003 Report Posted August 15, 2003 (edited) I don't have this one, so don't know if Lee is on all the tracks[doubt it]. Was this a Liberty date originally? I think the original LP cover is quite different. Edited August 17, 2003 by Dmitry Quote
catesta Posted August 15, 2003 Author Report Posted August 15, 2003 According to Dusty Groove it was originally a Liberty release. Quote

catesta Posted August 16, 2003 Author Report Posted August 16, 2003 Thank you gents. I assume it's a solid date? Quote
Jazzmoose Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 You know, I picked this one up when I was in the midst of my "Lee Morgan Completist Fever", and I'm not sure I can even remember it...time to hit the shelves! Quote
DrJ Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 Assuming this WAS indeed originally released on Liberty, and given Lee Morgan's popularity in particular with reissue fans...why the HELL hasn't Blue Note gotten around to reissuing this material legitimately!?!?! Quote
catesta Posted August 16, 2003 Author Report Posted August 16, 2003 It would be cool to see it from BN. Quote
Dmitry Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 It came out on LIBERTY TOCJ-5376. [Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars and Charlie Persip's Jazz Statesmen / Double Or Nothin'] (Liberty LRP-3045, LSP-7014) *Conte Candoli(tp-1) Lee Morgan(tp-2) Frank Rosolino(tb-3) Bob Cooper(ts-4) Benny Golson(ts-5) Wynton Kelly(p) Wilfred Middlebrooks (b-6) Red Mitchell(b-7) Charlie Persip(ds) #February 27, 1957 / Los Angels + Reggie of Chester -2, 4, 6 + Celedia -1, 3, 5, 6 + Blues After Dark -2, 4, 7 + Wildwood -1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Judging by the fact that it was recorded between Dizzy Atmosphere and Lee Morgan Vol.3, with almost the same rhythm section and Benny Golson, it's probably a pretty good session. The fact that it came out on TOCJ means that EMI does own it, and this Fresh Sounds cd is perhaps a boot. I thing you dug up a good cd for BN to reissue! Quote
catesta Posted August 16, 2003 Author Report Posted August 16, 2003 Hell yea dude. I'm not playin.' B) Quote
brownie Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 This is a thoroughly enjoyable date and would be a great reissue with alternates. There must be some lying around. Quote
BruceH Posted August 17, 2003 Report Posted August 17, 2003 If Blue Note re-issues this baby, I'll be in line to buy it! B) Quote
catesta Posted August 18, 2003 Author Report Posted August 18, 2003 Maybe Kevin B. can get someone in particular on the horn. Quote
Vincent, Paris Posted August 22, 2003 Report Posted August 22, 2003 This was recorded while the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band had a three-week stay in Los Angeles while touring the West Coast. As Howard Rumsey tells in his inspired liner notes, some of the younger members from the band - Lee Morgan, Wynton Kelly, Charli Persip, Benny Golson - went to the Lighthouse, Hermosa Beach, looking for some place to have a jam session and, probably, be able to judge by themselves some of the young West-Coasters, like a East/West, Black/White kind of confrontation. The session apparently smoked so much that Rumsey, then a new A&R for Liberty, suggested that they do it again in the studio, and the result is as great as you can imagine, if not as loose as a real jam.
