mandrill Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 Beside Ornette's & MJQ versions there must be quite a few other artists who recorded that masterpiece of a song. What versions do you own? What are your favorites? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 Marzette Watts (tenor) featuring vocalist Patty Waters on a truly lyrical version of the song, from the Marzette Watts Ensemble Savoy LP, produced by Bill Dixon in 1969. It's absolutely heartbreaking. Quote
B. Clugston Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 My favourite version is the Ornette/Izenson/Haden/Blackwell quartet version from 1968 in Rome. Really enjoy the Naked City cover as well. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 The only one I have is Bill Leslie's. My favourite version is by Chris Connor, from the album "Free spirits". Words, if I recall correctly, by Margot Guryan. MG Quote
EKE BBB Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 First track on this disc: Not my favorite, but a good one! Quote
Jim Dye Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 (edited) Haden/Motian/Allen - Etudes Soul Note Records 1987 Edited October 10, 2006 by Jim Dye Quote
Guy Berger Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 Old and New Dreams (ECM) -- not necessarily my favorite, but a very nice reflective version Quote
Jazz Kat Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 Is this the track from Shape of jazz to come?? If it is, I had no idea of any other version. I know there is another tune of the same name. By Horace Silver?? Anyways, I love Ornette's Lonley Women! Quote

Not the same tune as the Horace Silver tune from "Song for my father". MG Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 I remember a gritty surfy power trio version by 'The Dennison Kimball' group and some nice cello action from Chicago's '8 Bold Souls' (and I see you can go and grab that @ emusic). Still dig Zorn's bestest. Quote
mandrill Posted October 10, 2006 Author Report Posted October 10, 2006 Beside original version on "The Shape Of Jazz To Come", the one from this album is one of the best IMO. It is a trio with John Lindberg on bass and Thurman Barker on drums. Also Lester Bowie has a hilarious rendition on this album. I also second the Naked City one. That whole album is a classic Zorn, cover and all. Quote
Gary Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 I really enjoy Peter Brotzmann's solo version from 1984 . Quote
Jazz Kat Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 I was just checking out Song For My Father on cdnow. I have the lp so, I never heard the extra takes. I think the trio version of Que Pasa is way better than the take used on the album. Quote

Jazz Kat Posted October 11, 2006 Report Posted October 11, 2006 We were talking about Horace Silver's Lonley Women from Song for my Father. Quote

John L Posted October 11, 2006 Report Posted October 11, 2006 The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble does some nice things with it. Quote

alocispepraluger102 Posted October 12, 2006 Report Posted October 12, 2006 Haden/Motian/Allen - Etudes Soul Note Records 1987 indeed, and an early 60's denny zeitlin effort, with haden. Quote
mandrill Posted April 28, 2016 Author Report Posted April 28, 2016 I know that's an old thread, but here's another great version of that song. That whole album is highly recommended, recorded by what seems likeĀ "spur of the moment" band, including the late great Billy Bang. Quote
