I've really been enjoying this RVG reissue. The remaster called it to my attention. I had never heard it before.

This is a really great session and an unsung gem in the Prestige canon. Anybody else dig this one?

Oh yes, an old favorite. The album actually enjoyed some crossover success back in the 60's.

I've always wanted to get into Lateef, but it just hasn't happened. I have the OJC's, the Golden Flute, Live at Pep's, and Blue Lateef; it all sounds like stuff I should like (hence the multiple purchases), but it just hasn't clicked with me yet. Out of all of them, Live at Pep's and the Golden Flute are probably my favorites. Maybe someday...

FWIW, I got into "YL" via his work with Cannonball Adderley. Then moved on to his own albums, with the one exception of Live At Pep's.

"Eastern Sounds" is my favorite Lateef album.

Ditto.

"Love Theme from Spartacus" is incredible.

One of the most sublime pieces of kitsch you'll ever hear! :tup

If Alex North is kitsch, so is all of the music discussed on this message board.

Of course, "kitsch" is meaningless in the post modern era...

Eastern Sounds was my first Lateef-led session, and remains my favorite. This recording caused me to dive deeply into his catalog, focusing primarily on the OJC titles. Will Before Dawn (Verve) every make another appearance (i.e. reasonably priced reissue)?

I wasn't trying to put Lateef down, btw - I adore him, and his most recent 2CD release with the French Belmondo Brothers (on their label, BFlat) is terrific.

I was rather giving him props for succeeding in turning a rather ... er, well, kitschy, as I'd say, tune into so great a performance.

(Have you ever seen the re-stored - meaning: with a few scenes ever so slightly homo-erotic - version of "Spartacus" that was in theatres abou 6-7 years ago?)
