How did you take advantage of the Tower sale?

Recommended Posts

20% off - 2 Small Faces imports

30% off - Linnie Tristano/Warne Marsh on Capital (Intuition?)

I passed on some Jazz Crusaders live and Donald Byrd BN's at 40%, had too much in my hands and couldn't decide...went back this week and there wasn't much left here in Ptld, OR

50% off - Andrew Hill, Time Lines

Wille Nelson, Cindy Walker tribute

They are all things I was thinking about getting anyways, will definitely listen to and my wife might even be interested in some of 'em too. I'm very proud of myself that I didn't buy a bunch of stuff just 'cause it was X% off.

The Sherman Oaks had a 10-DVD Chick Corea box set. (List $100)

I found the Mosaic Select : Pacific Jazz Piano Trios at the Marina Del Rey store. $21.60 (funny, I went there last Wednesday looking for it and couldn't find it) Also bought #12, not sure I'll like it.

Second and final visit Monday. Very little left in jazz, and classical totally gone at the Tyson's Corner location. Miles, Monk, Coltrane, Dexter, all Impulse, all OJC gone. Just a few old RVGs left. [Another shopper, unfamiliar with jazz, had a copy of Speak No Evil in his hand and asked me if it was good. Told him it was the best jazz album still available.] For a total of $52, I picked up:

Ryan Kisor The Dream (Criss Cross)

Bill Mays Live at Jazz Standard (Palmetto)

Solal/Douglas Rue de Seine (CamJazz)

Mary Lou Williams Collective Zodiac Suite: Revisited (Mary Records) [Geri Allen, Buster Williams, Billy Hart, Andrew Cyrille]

Joe Lovano Streams of Expression (Blue Note)

Bob Belden Three Days of Rain (Sunnyside)

Andrew Hill Point of Departure (Blue Note)

Passed on the recent Karrin Allyson, and the last Kurt Elling title.

Well, in Atlanta the sign says 7 days left, and the cds are all 70% off. Dvds still 60%. Jazz has really been hit, was there last week, and jazz and Classical was already a former shell of itself. And even though 30 miles away, when I found out their phone was disconnected,(I called the Kroger next to them to make sure they were still open) I thought I should check them out one last time. Still keep finding weird things that I swear weren't there since I had gone thru every single jazz cd before. Like a Clarence Williams Frog and a "Robert Parker" C. Williams cd. Think it was last week that I got a Teddy Lewis Jazzy cd from Retrieval (Actually several Retrievals, only 9.99 to start, so how can you not take a chance?) Actually made a deal with my Dad, pay me back, and I'll save you the hard work of finding stuff to buy me for Christmas! ^_^ can't recall everything I got, will have to report on the annual what'd ya get for Xmas thread.....

My local store still has some jazz. I picked up 6 discs yesterday.

  • Joel Harrison - Free Country & So Long 2nd Street. Mostly moody, mellow jazzy takes on country songs. Features David Binney.
  • Diego Urcola - Viva. Latin Jazz. The first track, Tango Azul, has a fantastic odd rhythm.
  • Jason Moran - Artist in Residence
  • Vijay Iyer - Memporophilia
  • Slow Poke - Redmeption. Has Michael Blake on tenor, who has made some great recordings in the past. Can't wait to listen to this.

All for just over 30 bucks.
