French clarinetist Claude Luter died today in Poissy, a Paris suburb. He was 83. Luter was one of the most visible New Orleans-style musician in the Paris postwar scene.

His band played with Sidney Bechet when Bechet came to Paris in 1949. Luter's band accompanied him for several years.

Bechet-Luter records became hits.

Luter also played with various other musicians like Mezz Mezzrow, Barney Bigard and Albert Nicholas.

He led various revivalist bands until last year.
