johnblitweiler Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 Hi everyone, first time poster here (thanks, Jim!) Question about Louis and the King Oliver material. Has anyone ever compared the sound quality of the "Off The Record" versions versus the Integrale vol. 1 versions? I see in a post above that neither one is truly "complete", but they both get pretty close, and I've decided to embark on bullding a complete Louis Armstrong collection; it seems one of these two is the way to go. Might as well start at the beginning, eh? So yeah, Off The Record, Integrale vol. 1, or other? Really, sound quality is my number one concern, followed close second by "complete-ness". Opinions? On Off the Record and the Frémeaux Integrale the Oliver sides are complete. For more information I see my post 68. Except that I wish to heaven that unissued 1923 take of "Someday Sweetheart" had been discovered. Could it be the same arrangement that Oliver later recorded with the Plantation Orchestra, with Johnny Dodds added for that emotive clarinet solo? Quote
jcam_44 Posted April 17, 2015 Report Posted April 17, 2015 (edited) Trying to decide which volume to pick up first in the range of Vol. 9-13. I have the complete hot 5 and & from Sony and a nice collection of stuff with the All-Stars. Looking for stuff with his Orchestra or other formations. Any suggestions? AllenLowe Posted April 17, 2015 Report Posted April 17, 2015 I don't know if this has been addressed, but how are the sources for the Decca era on these? Did they, hopefully, steal them from the right places? Quote

I would move toward the large orchestra material next, particularly as you already have a collection with the All Stars. Get all of the volumes from the 1930s, starting with the earlier ones. l p Posted May 5, 2015 Report Posted May 5, 2015 there's a lot of issued 1943-45 radio material that they didn't bother to include on these integrale volumes. Quote
brownie Posted April 11, 2016 Author Report Posted April 11, 2016 Not yet. It's bond to come out soon... Quote
king ubu Posted April 12, 2016 Report Posted April 12, 2016 Funny this comes up ... just checked the interwebs for news a few days ago as well ... we need more 1948 (I actually wanted to check if the All Stars date on the new Earl Hines set from Storyville was out on Fremeaux - but their latest volume cuts off a few months too early). l p Posted April 12, 2016 Report Posted April 12, 2016 (edited) hopefully the next 2 volumes will mostly be taken up by 1948 and 1949 broadcasts from Ciro's and The Click in philadelphia. Edited April 12, 2016 by l p Quote
gmonahan Posted April 13, 2016 Report Posted April 13, 2016 Just curious since I don't have them, but did the Fremeaux sets include Satch's tracks recorded for the movie, "New Orleans"? gregmo Quote
