Soul Stream Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 yes, awesome recording. Dr. Lonnie kills it....very,very, very good imho. Quote
mikeweil Posted October 3, 2006 Author Report Posted October 3, 2006 Thanks - I'll order this along with some other Fantasy sale leftovers Zweitausendeins has unearthed. Quote
Aggie87 Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 (edited) It's well worth that price. Also, don't overlook the other Chartbusters release, by essentially the same lineup, which is a Blue Note covers set. This one was recorded in January 95. Edited October 4, 2006 by Aggie87 Quote

Yes, I LOVE both the chartbusters CDs with lonnie. He gets to play on standards which he doesn't get much of a chance to do on his own solo releases ...so it's a big treat. Quote
Claude Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 I can get this for € 2,99 - I suppose it's worth that price? Damn, Zweitausendeins has added new OJC stuff again, many CDs at 1.99 Euro. When will this ever end? Quote
mikeweil Posted October 4, 2006 Author Report Posted October 4, 2006 Well, at that price, you can't complain .... Quote

My copy of that one has rather muffled sound. I almost never complain about the sound of an album, but this gets into my player much less frequently than the Prestige CD. MG Quote
bertrand Posted October 5, 2006 Report Posted October 5, 2006 I have the NYC CD and I think it's fabulous. Great versions of 'No Room For Squares' and 'Blues In A Jiff'. I wish Dr. Lonnie could have recorded with Jackie Mac and Hank Mobley back in the day. I got the Prestige one through the Concord Sale (if you can't find it, it's listed under rock). I only listened briefly. I thought it was a bit more perfunctory, but I need to spend more time with it. Bertrand. Quote
mikeweil Posted October 13, 2006 Author Report Posted October 13, 2006 Listed under rock????!!! Rarely heard a jazzier organ album. Perhaps the band name inspired that categorization ..... "Chartbusters" - I wish they were, and the originals they selected had been. Really a very good organ CD. One unexpected observation: On the very first track the voicing of alto and tenor together sounds almost exactly like a Varitone! Quote
mikeweil Posted October 13, 2006 Author Report Posted October 13, 2006 (edited) BTW: Soul Stream was right: The Turbanator absolutely rips it up on this CD. Dr. fans, go get it before it's too late! Edited October 13, 2006 by mikeweil Quote
