Mike, I think the lick/ostinato figure in #3 is lifted from some Ibrahim tune... no way you can't hear the closeness of the first part!

Interesting: I heard Jarrett playing this kind of stuff before I encountered Abdullah Ibrahim - perhaps it depends on who you heard first.

I was obviously not serious when using "corny"... just a reference to the other discussion about Elvin... ;)

Of course I know you weren't serious - the proverbial corny congero will from now on stand tall among the ingenious organissimo board inventions .....

p.s. maybe I should write a tune with that title - "Corny Congero" ......

How about "Mike, the Corny Conguero"? :g

I don't know about Jarrett or Ibrahim, but these kinds of grooves to me seem to come more or less straight out of the ZA jive (which goes back to the late 50s, I think). Doesn't matter, in the end, as this was the one band of Jarrett's that really was great! (I do like *some* European Quartet now and then, also some of the trio and solo things, but the American Quartet is by far my favourite Jarrett group.)

If you volunteer to do a Swiss rap on top with appropriate lyrics and all ..... I will always have an extra cowbell handy to throw at you if it gets too corny :P

Well, some recipients have yet to chime in, but I'm about ready to pull the plug and give the answers soon. Beforehand, though, I'll try to get a few more guesses from whoever's reading...

Some well-known musicians who have yet to be identified on CD1 include:

- pianist on number 4

- drummer on number 6

- all three on number 8!

- pianist and bassist on number 10

I'll give some hints for number 8: The composer of number 8 is the bassist on number 5 and has played with the no. 8 pianist; the bassist has played and recorded with Bill Evans (the pianist); the drummer is one of the rare ones who is right at home with either older, mainstream stars or with avant-gardistes.

Go on, take some wild guesses!
