jazzman4133 Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 The following albums are all on "e" music and I have been contemplating downloading them. Unfortunately the brief sound bite they give you doesn't really tell you anything. If you have any of these I'd appreciate feedback and comments. Thanks. Rev-elation : Joe Locke Vibe Mania: Steve Pouchie Legacy with Jimmy Smith: Joey DeFrancesco Smooth Sailing: Teddy Edwards Swing Low Sweet Clarinet: Eddie Daniels / Big Band Reunion: Larry Vuckovich 5400 North: Nat Pierce Lip Service: Joe Helleny Just Friends: Irvin Stokes Quote
brownie Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 The Teddy Edwards is one to get! Not familiar with the others, but intrigued by the Nat Pierce... Quote

It's a nice tribute to Milt Jackson, well played by Locke and some of Bags' old band members (LeDonne, Cranshaw, Roker). It's a live (and solid) set, recorded in 2005 at Ronnie Scott's. Nothing more, nothing less. (On the cover, Locke looks incredibly like Stan Kenton ) luca Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 Enthusiastically second Brownie on the Teddy Edwards! The Smith/DeFrancesco is OK. Some say JOS does stuff on this that he'd never done before. I dunno, I'm not that detailed a listener to this; don't really like Joey De much. You should be able to find a thread about this album somewhere around here with comments by some proper experts. MG Quote
marcello Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 "Close Enough For Love" is my favorite on Rev-elation. Here's the band last year taken by Yours Truly: Quote
John Tapscott Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 I quite like the Locke CD. Some really great vibes playing on that set. A swinging band, too. I have Joel Helleny's Lip Service. Haven't heard it for a while. Decent, if not exceptional record. Hellleny is a solid, mainstream- boppish trombonist, but, much like this CD, not really outstanding in the field, IMHO. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 (edited) I had the Nat Pierce on LP but thought it was not among his best recordings and disposed of it. I have the Joe Locke, The Teddy Edwards, The Joel Helleny, and the Larry Vuckovich all on CD. My clear favorite would be the Joe Locke which I like a lot. The Teddy Edwards is also well worth getting. The Joel Helleny and Larry Vuckovich are both ok, but not anything special. Edited September 30, 2006 by Peter Friedman Quote
