French Pathe "Jazz Stars Series" FPX 221

Which one of these is the original? I'd think it's the French Pathe, but I could be wrong. Also, is there any additional material out there that wasn't included on this LP?

Was this ever reissued on cd?

I'm pretty sure the Pathé is the original.

The CD also includes the other album recorded at the same venue, 'Concert à Gaveau'.

Liberty's is definitely an original US release. As for Pathe I've done a quick research just out of curiosity. Here is the link FYU.

Could that hefty price tag indicate that you're dealing with original French release here or is it just the gullibility of jazz newbies?

The Liberty LRP 3335/LST 7335 surely is the original US release. But it was not released until 1964, or 1963 the earliest (link to Liberty discography: http://www.bsnpubs.com/liberty/libertya.html ). The French Columbia FPX 221/CTX 40.181 was released in France already in 1962.

The recording date for 'Jazz à Gaveau' is May 3rd, 1962; the follow-up 'Concert à Gaveau' (FPX 253/CTX 40.187) was recorded on December 11th, 1963.

Just a short comment regarding pressing and sound quality: I have not compared these two releases, but the Solal albums on French Columbia I've heard have all been tremendously good pressings. I know that some albums on the various "local" European Columbia imprints turned up on Liberty in the US. The one album I've heard in its Liberty incarnation (by Swedish pianist Nils Lindberg) was inferior to the Swedish Columbia release.

Well, I have a Liberty stereo pressing of this, played it for the first time yesterday, liked Solal's Tatum-like facility and Powell-like imagination. My copy has some clicks, pops adn distortion from being played with a siding nail of a cartridge in the past, so I wanted to check out what my options would be as far as replacement. I'm definitely not spending $80 on the French Columbia, I'll tell you that. Also, the stereo pressing sounds glassy and very much over-extended, with Solal in the far left corner, so perhaps the mono press of this would sound better. Very nice LP music-wise.

One other note - the applause sounds spliced in, way too thunderous, like Solal just played Brahms' whole piano concerto with his left toe.

The French Columbia 'Jazz A Gaveau' was the original release of this date. The copy I have says the concert was recorded in mono and stereo but I hear no stereo spread on my copy. The sound is excellent.
