kulu se mama Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 somebody buy these - you will not be disappointed. (well 99 out of 100 people here will not be disappointed). Quote
rostasi Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 These come with a book?Yup! Glorious they are! About 100 pages each - packed with info. Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 22, 2006 Author Report Posted September 22, 2006 each volume has notes that are taken directly from the book complete, and that roughly correspond with the years covered - Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 22, 2006 Author Report Posted September 22, 2006 (edited) I was fighting the urge to do this, but here's some lines from a review by Michael Steinman from the September issue of Cadence: "near revelatory" "revelation repeated from track to track" "radically imaginative" "you won't believe the varieties" "a rare, irreplaceable pleasure...as if as if we were permitted to see three dimensions having lived in a flat world" "the transfers...strike a comfortable balance between surface noise from incredibly rare records and the digitally restored musical signal" "and to top it off Lowe is incredibly good looking" Edited September 22, 2006 by AllenLowe Quote
Dmitry Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 So they come with the book proper or each set comes with a little booklet compiled from the book? Quote
tjobbe Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 send you an email re: Vol.2 and shipment to Germany.... Cheers, Oliver Quote
jazzbo Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 So they come with the book proper or each set comes with a little booklet compiled from the book? Each comes with the appropriate quarter of the book. A real bargain I tell ya! Quote
Hot Ptah Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 Both volumes are fantastic, and a steal at the price quoted here. Quote
Dmitry Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 Tell you the truth, I would've jumped on these a long time ago if Lowe wasn't such an unpleasant individual.... Quote
RDK Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 Tell you the truth, I would've jumped on these a long time ago if Lowe wasn't such an unpleasant individual.... I hope you're joking, but even if you're not and even if Allen is so unpleasant... well, you've waited long enough. Highly recommended. Jump away. Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 22, 2006 Author Report Posted September 22, 2006 what I lack in charm I make up in rudeness - Quote
Quincy Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 Thought I'd throw in a superficial comment or 2 as it's the only kind I'm qualified at. Lest folks who haven't bought this yet think it's some sort of dry historical thing, you couldn't be more wrong. One night whilst drinking a wee bit of bourbon I had on discs 5 & 6 (or was it 6 & 7? - it was good bourbon) on from the 2nd collection (Vol. 2, 1927-1934.) Lemme tell ya, thanks to the selection of songs & sequencing, these discs worked like only the best mix tapes do. And uh, if you have some sort of negative perception of the author/compiler/one-man-band, or are a highly loyal charter member of the Dexter Gordon fanclub, DON'T let that get in the way of getting this (or these) set(s). The delightfully packaged sets also don't hog shelf space either. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 Buy the damn sets! I did! Quote
RDK Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 That's a great idea, Quincy. Allen, have you tried marketting these as "like a mix tape from the 1930s?" That might attract the young 'uns to this fine ol' music. Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 22, 2006 Author Report Posted September 22, 2006 not a bad idea - also will mention that if the next two volumes ever get issued, there's actually some Dexter on there somewhere (I think) - Quote
Hot Ptah Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 IF? I already have a piggy bank filled with the money to buy the next two volumes! Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 22, 2006 Author Report Posted September 22, 2006 well, it took them 5 years to issue the first two - so I'm just hoping everything goes smoothly - Quote
Adam Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 Hi Allen, I'd like to buy one. PM sent. Thanks! Adam Quote
rostasi Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 It even features Bing's heavier set brother Big Crosby! Quote
mikelz777 Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 PM and email sent, thanks! Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 26, 2006 Author Report Posted September 26, 2006 (edited) more news - a volume 3 is supposed to be out any day, and volume 4 will definitely follow relatively quickly, or at least I am told - the distributor is unloading promos because of the new volume, so I've got about 5 more and that'll be it for a while, at least until the new volume is out - so 5 more available at $35 shipped media mail - shoot me an email at alowe@maine.rr.com - my paypal address is the same - Edited September 26, 2006 by AllenLowe Quote
